CHARLESTOWN, MA, February 04, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Amy A. Laine, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Laine's journey in market intelligence and social media analytics is marked by a series of pioneering roles and industry-shaping achievements at IBM, as well as a steadfast commitment to understanding how people think, interact, and perceive — not in isolation, but as shaped by their society, culture, and social structures.
A Distinguished Market Intelligence Professional at IBM, Dr. Laine leads the company's global reputation monitoring, incorporating best practices in reputation measurement, driving clarity around the factors impacting IBM's reputation, and helping to guide brand and campaign strategy. She is responsible for tracking how IBM is perceived, evaluated, and discussed across critical audience segments, identifying potential reputational risks and assessing whether IBM is viewed as a leader or relevant business partner relative to competitors. Her work involves reviewing content from print, online, and social media platforms, leading quantitative and qualitative research studies, and analyzing the influence of internal and external stakeholders. Through these initiatives, she had demonstrated an exceptional ability to synthesize complex data into actionable insights that inform strategic decision-making at the highest levels of the organization.
Early in her journey at IBM, Dr. Laine played a central role in leading global integration efforts for ibm.com, collaborating with teams worldwide to ensure cohesive digital operations across more than 2 million pages. Her contributions earned her multiple internal recognitions, including an ibm.com Excellence Award in 2003, Excellence Awards for communication and user-centered design in 2004, and several Bravo Awards for exceptional performance. Her standout success reflected a dedication to hearing the voice of global users and seeing cross-function insights to make the site more intuitive for IBM's international audiences.
Springboarding from these online achievements, Dr. Laine built the company's social media and analytics function from inception, transforming it into a sustainable division that became integral to IBM's marketing and communication strategy. Initially establishing the Market Trends and New Opportunities Program in 2007, she evolved this into the IBM C.O.R.E. (Cross-Functional Ongoing Research and Engagement) social media program – an initiative recognized for its innovative and comprehensive approach to social intelligence. Under her leadership, IBM received the 2010 SAMMY Award for 'Best Social Listening Strategy,' Enterprise Category, with industry leaders describing her work as exemplary.
In 2012, Dr. Laine created the Social Measurement Framework, spearheading R.E.A.C.H (Reach / Engagement / Amplification / Conversion Hub) to coordinate IBM communication with identified influential individuals, social networks and discussions. The ensuing cross-brand influencer program was later transitioned to IBM's CIO office in London, marking a successful handoff that allowed her to focus on research.
IBM committed to turning Dr. Laine's deep, in-house experience into a formal Social Insights Certification Program, sending her to train a global team in social analytics' best practices in Romania, India, and across the US. Becoming an industry gold standard, the program produced world-class consulting, leading edge social media research techniques, and unparalleled talent dedicated to the delivery of social intelligence – and earned her an IBM Excellence & Eminence Award (2013) as well as a 2014 Innovation Award.
Another hallmark of Dr. Laine's tenure was the creation of the Social Intelligence Center of Competency weekly seminar in 2008 – a forum that fostered open dialogue among teams from ibm.com, hardware, software, services, and research units. This cross-discipline Integrated Virtual Team (IVT) convened uninterrupted until 2020, becoming the longest-standing internal seminar at IBM. Her commitment to fostering collaboration and critical inquiry was evident as she only rarely missed a session, even while traveling abroad.
Prior to joining IBM, Dr. Laine spent 5 years working at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, which is renowned for its psychiatric care, research, and education and is the largest psychiatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. There, she served as research lead on a National Institute of Mental Health grant for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), an American Psychiatric Association publication on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders – a formative experience that deepened her interest in human behavior and empathy and sharpened her views on research methods.
Dr. Laine's academic background has been foundational to her accomplishments. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology from New York University in 1999 after completing a master's degree in I/O psychology also at NYU. Prior to that, her undergraduate studies culminated with a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in philosophy from Tulane University, where she graduated with honors and a deep interest in cultural anthropology.
Dr. Laine's wealth of experience in market research and the analysis of how people think, interact, and perceive their surroundings has made her a sought-after expert within the industry. For example, she has served as a consultant to the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF), co-chaired its Social Council from 2018 to 2021, and was a leading member of the Word-of-Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) Research and Measurement Council from 2017 to 2018.
Throughout her storied career, Dr. Laine has received numerous accolades including induction into the Social Intelligence Insider 50 List – for which she was featured in a commemorative coffee table book in 2022; named a 2012 Distinguished Market Intelligence Professional in "recognition and appreciation of outstanding leadership and expertise in the practice of market intelligence" at IBM; and honored with the 2011 ARF Great Minds Award, Innovation Category, receiving a certificate for excellence in innovative research ideas.
Reflecting on her accomplishments thus far, Dr. Laine credits her drive for knowledge and Montaignesque values to her father, Robert Dana Williams, a distinguished corporate lawyer who was included in Marquis Who's Who in American Law, 7th Edition, 1992-1993. Dr. Laine's grandfather, Harold Warren Williams, was included in Who's Who in New England. Influenced by thinkers such as Edward Tufte, Scott Galloway, and Malcom Gladwell, she strives to convey insights simply yet powerfully through compelling storytelling. She is also particularly grateful to her IBM colleagues, especially Pauline Ores, Susan Emerick, Bill Chamberlin, Linda Nelson, Carol Galvin, David Chamak, Paul Turnbull, and Tammy Luke, whose ideas and skills complemented her own and supported a track record of consistently delivering measurable business outcomes.
Looking to the future with continued determination, Dr. Laine hopes to contribute more directly to meaningful causes beyond innovation alone. Regardless of where her path leads next, she is excited by roles where technology serves the world's needs more authentically. Inspired by initiatives like IBM's Smarter Planet Campaign that addressed global challenges through purposeful technology, she remains dedicated to making a tangible difference.
