He is particularly proud to have created the IMPACTT (Integrating Multiple Perspectives Across the Curriculum for Today and Tomorrow) Program at Sunnyside High School. Over six years of involvement with IMPACTT, he witnessed remarkable outcomes. For example, when the first class graduated, its 20 students received most of the awards from a school of 600. The IMPACTT Program offered enriching experiences, including trips to England to attend the International Conference on Thinking, Phoenix a year later, so the students could be presenters at the International Conference on Thinking, and Washington, D.C., where the students received the President's Environmental Youth Award for Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Protection Services from the President of the United States.
Happily married and a proud father, Dr. Cardell is devoted to his family, which includes three children, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He enjoys music—particularly rock and roll from the 1950s through the early 1970s— and sings and plays several instruments, including guitar, bass, drums, and harmonica. He and his wife regularly write, record, and perform music.
