As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Johnson has established a distinguished career spanning five decades in the visual arts, marked by significant achievements and contributions to both the fine art and entertainment industries. For the past 20 years, he has served as an illustrator, art director, and painter at Artjack, where he is responsible for painting, design and writing. In this capacity, Mr. Johnson has focused on creating a collection of paintings featuring his children, as well as imaginative works for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His creative output includes over 600 sold paintings, encompassing landscapes and vibrant scenes that showcase his expertise in watercolor, gouache and oil. He is currently writing a book and designing a collection centered on these personal themes.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Johnson dedicated 27 years to the film industry as an illustrator and art director from the late 1970s until 2003. His artistic vision contributed to many iconic films, including "The Goonies," "Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Ghostbusters." During this period, he became known for his ability to bring imaginative concepts to life on screen. His work in film was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Directors Guild, underscoring his influence and legacy within the industry. Additionally, he is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Before entering the film sector, Mr. Johnson spent 12 years at two national advertising agencies. This experience provided him with a strong foundation in visual communication and design, skills that would later prove invaluable throughout his career in both commercial and fine art.
Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Johnson has been honored with awards from the National Watercolor Society and the California Art Club. Four of his major paintings were accepted by the American Watercolor Society, with one earning awards and touring nationally for a year. He is a signature member of both the American and National Watercolor Societies, reflecting his longstanding commitment to advancing the field of watercolor painting. He is a former officer with the National and president of the Morro Bay Golf Club.
Mr. Johnson's academic background includes a year in the School of Architecture at the University of Michigan and earning a bachelor's degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. This formal education equipped him with advanced technical skills and artistic sensibilities, which have been instrumental to his success across multiple disciplines. He attributes much of his achievement to recognizing his talent at age ten and actively pursuing it, encouraged by his parents, who provided him with materials to explore his interests. Influenced by artists such as Andrew Wyeth and inspired by his father's creative pursuits, Mr. Johnson realized early on that a successful career as an artist was possible.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Johnson has demonstrated civic engagement through various initiatives. He created a grade school and high school art program for the Paso Robles library system, regularly donates blood and contributes to the Morro Bay Golf Club to support the boys' and girls' golf teams.
His creative endeavors extend into authorship; he recently completed writing and designing "How I Snuck into the Movies," a 180-page book featuring over 600 illustrations from his film industry career. He is currently seeking a publisher for this work while planning additional projects, including "The Art of Jack Johnson: The Children" and "The Art of Jack Johnson: The Landscapes."
Born in Indianapolis, Mr. Johnson is the father of four children. In addition to painting and writing, he enjoys playing golf and hiking. Looking ahead, he remains focused on publishing his first book and completing subsequent projects that celebrate both his artistic legacy and personal inspirations.
