Marked by more than four decades of clinical excellence and leadership, Dr. Bernstein has built a distinguished career in pediatric medicine and medical management. Since 1990, he has served as both physician manager and pediatrician at Weston Pediatric Physicians, where he practices general pediatrics, and is known for his vision and compassionate approach. Alongside his work at Weston Pediatric Physicians, Dr. Bernstein has been affiliated with the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since 1982. At this renowned institution, he has provided care for countless young patients while contributing to vital advancements in pediatric oncology. His clinical practice at the Jimmy Fund Clinic has been one of the most rewarding aspects of his career, reflecting his deep commitment to improving the lives of children facing serious illnesses. He has brought an expertise in treatment and long-term care for children with leukemia and lymphoma that has earned him widespread recognition as an authority in these fields.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Bernstein completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, following a residency and internship at the former facility. These formative years provided him with comprehensive training in both general pediatrics and subspecialty care, laying a strong foundation for his later achievements.

Dr. Bernstein's scientific background is rooted in postdoctoral work in molecular biology at the Whitehead Institute. During this period, Dr. Bernstein contributed to groundbreaking studies examining the potential role of oncogenes in cancer metastasis. He subsequently established his own laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, focusing on the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression. Throughout his research career, he secured various grants and funding, presented papers and talks, and authored a chapter in what is widely regarded as the definitive text in pediatric hematology.

A significant highlight of Dr. Bernstein's academic journey occurred during his doctoral studies when he spent an academic year in Cameroon conducting genetic research among diverse ethnic groups. This experience not only broadened his scientific perspective but also deepened his appreciation for global health challenges. He was honored as the keynote speaker at the International Scientific Symposium on Biomedical Science, 2007, Yaounde, Cameroon, honoring Dr. Bernstein's mentor, Cameroon's first local hematologist, where he engaged with public health leaders who have been pivotal in reducing HIV and AIDS cases in Cameroon.

In 1995, Dr. Bernstein helped establish Affiliated Pediatric Practices, an organization dedicated to delivering high-quality pediatric health care efficiently and cost-effectively, also focusing on patient experience. As medical director and then president since its inception, he has overseen its growth from five practices to 25 at 35 sites, now encompassing 100 pediatricians, 35 nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Under his leadership, Affiliated Pediatric Practices also became affiliated with Mass General Brigham — formerly Partners Healthcare — further expanding its reach and impact.

Outside of his primary roles, Dr. Bernstein is actively involved in professional organizations that reflect his commitment to advancing pediatric medicine and health care leadership. He serves as president of Affiliated Pediatric Practices and holds memberships with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the Medical Group Management Association and the American Association for Physician Leadership.

Hailing from an equally impressive academic background, Dr. Bernstein earned a Doctor of Medicine with honors from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago in 1980 after completing a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics and an Artium Baccalaureus in biology with honors at the same institution in 1978. Reflecting on his storied journey to date, he attributes his success to hard work, fortuitous opportunities, receiving valuable mentorship from esteemed colleagues and the unwavering love and support of his wife.

Dr. Bernstein's civic engagement includes service on the advisory committee for Mass General Brigham Community Physicians and membership on the board of directors for Partners Community Healthcare, Inc. Also an active member of his synagogue, he supports various charities focused on Alzheimer's disease, heart disease and cancer research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bernstein has received numerous accolades recognizing his clinical excellence, research advancements and leadership. He was named a MacArthur Fellow from 1984 through 1989. He is currently a Top Doctor by both Boston Magazine and Castle Connolly in 2026, and was honored with a special award for 30 years of service from Affiliated Pediatric Practices in 2026. In 2009 he received the Massachusetts Medical Law Report for Rx for Excellence Award, Hero from the Field. Earlier in his journey, he was presented with the Samuel O. Thier, M.D. Physician Leadership Award from Partners Healthcare in 2004 and the Medical Alumni Prize from the University of Chicago in 1980. He has also been recognized as one of America's Top Doctors by various organizations over a number of years.

Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Bernstein enjoys traveling internationally, playing tennis and golf, gardening and spending quality time with his family and grandchildren. Happily married for nearly 50 years and a proud father of three, he remains dedicated to ensuring that all children are safe, healthy and well-cared-for through both his clinical practice and broader advocacy efforts within pediatric medicine.
