Bringing more than a decades of experience in the academic sector to her current role, Ms. Dodds serves as a teacher librarian within the Clear Creek Amana Community School District in Tiffin, Iowa. In this capacity, she manages the entire middle school library collection, teaches afternoon classes such as current events, and mentors students who are pursuing teacher librarian certification. A vital resource for diverse materials within the school community, she is particularly proud of her ongoing work in advocating for intellectual freedom and freedom of speech in schools.
Prior to joining the Clear Creek school district, Ms. Dodds excelled as a middle school teacher librarian at Mid-Prairie from 2020 to 2025, during which she further developed her expertise in library management and student mentorship. Overseeing student library services across four schools within the district and library staff at three of those locations, she also organized Scholastic Book Fairs to further enhance the student reading experience.
From 2016 to 2020, Ms. Dodds held the position of assistant librarian with Keokuk High School. There, she supported daily library operations and contributed to the development of crucial literacy events including Teen Read Week as well as Banned Book Week.
Determined to deepen her own education as well, Ms. Dodds completed an archives internship at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in 2016. This experience allowed her to gain valuable skills in archival research and preservation that later informed her approach to student support as a teacher librarian.
From 2014 to 2016, Ms. Dodds was an instructor for Maroger Fine Art Classes, where she taught various art techniques utilizing the Larry Gluck method and encouraged creative expression among her students. Concurrently, she spent three years as a substitute teacher for Iowa City Public Schools, gaining experience in special education settings as well as school libraries.
During the 2012 to 2013 school year, Ms. Dodds worked as a library assistant at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In addition to assisting patients and doctors by providing access to critical information resources, she also read stories to patients and delivered books and movies to children in need.
In 2011, Ms. Dodds was a librarian editor for the Family Physicians Inquiry Network in Columbia, Missouri, where she contributed her editorial expertise to medical literature reviews and developed documents for physicians. Her earlier experience includes serving on the reference staff at Hardin Library at University of Iowa from 2009 to 2010, during which she assisted patrons with research inquiries and information retrieval.
A significant milestone in Ms. Dodds' career was her selection as a junior research fellow at the Library of Congress in Washington, District of Columbia in 2009 during her first summer of graduate school. This prestigious fellowship stands out as one of her most notable achievements and provided foundational experience that shaped her professional trajectory. In 2022, she returned to the Library of Congress for a meaningful visit with her parents, highlighting the personal significance of this accomplishment.
Alongside her primary roles, Ms. Dodds is devoted to advancing the field of librarianship and upholding the highest professional standards. She is an active member of several influential organizations including the American Association of School Librarians, the Iowa Library Association, the Iowa Association of School Librarians and the Iowa Associations Collaborative.
Hailing from an equally accomplished academic background, Ms. Dodds earned a Master of Library Science from the University of Iowa in 2010 and a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and sciences from Iowa State University in 2006. To augment her qualifications, she is certified in elementary education by Regents Alternative Pathway to Iowa Licensure (RAPIL) and in elementary education and teaching by the University of Northern Iowa.
Throughout her career, Ms. Dodds has been recognized for her leadership and dedication to accessible resources. She had the honor of presenting before University of Iowa President Sally Mason — a testament to her professional visibility — and received the Braverman Scholarship from University of Iowa in recognition of her academic accomplishments.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Dodds is civically engaged through associations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Maintaining an active lifestyle, she enjoys running, participating in races — including training for 10K events — and has participated in Walk for Cancer as well as various community-centered events through Jaycees.
Reflecting on her storied journey to date, Ms. Dodds attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her family as well as the perseverance and tenacity she developed while running distance events during her high school years. Competing in multiple races at each meet instilled in her a strong work ethic and determination that guided her through college and continue to drive her professional undertakings today.
Inspired by her family's legacy at Iowa State University, Ms. Dodds knew early on that she wanted to pursue higher education. Although she was initially hesitant to follow a teaching path due to her mother's career as an educator, her passion for knowledge ultimately led her toward librarianship after she gained experience in archives and nonprofit organizations.
Determined to further her impact in the coming years, Ms. Dodds plans to broaden her horizons by traveling internationally to explore destinations she has read about throughout her life. She remains committed to the ideals of lifelong learning through reading and is considering pursuing a doctorate as she continues to advocate for education and intellectual freedom on behalf of students throughout Iowa and beyond.
