Mr. Feist has built a distinguished career in the rodeo and Western sports industry, marked by innovation, leadership and a deep commitment to the advancement of team roping. In 1977, he founded the Bob Feist Invitational, an event designed to showcase the top talent in team roping. Drawing inspiration from his observations of other sports and his desire to elevate the profile of professional ropers, Mr. Feist invited the best competitors in the field to participate. The inaugural event featured 40 teams and quickly gained recognition for its unique format and high level of competition.
Initially held in Chowchilla, California, for three years, the Bob Feist Invitational later moved to Las Vegas, then Denton, Texas and ultimately found a long-term home in Reno, Nevada. The event transitioned from outdoor venues to an indoor facility, where it flourished for over two decades before relocating to Oklahoma. The Bob Feist Invitational remains a premier event in the sport, reflecting Mr. Feist's vision and dedication.
Earlier, in 1968, Mr. Feist established Ropers Sports News, a publication dedicated exclusively to team roping and rodeo coverage. Recognizing a gap in media representation for this segment of the sport, he launched a four-page newsletter that grew into the world's only team roping publication at the time. For 56 years, he served as founder and publisher, using Ropers Sports News as a platform to promote team roping, lobby for its inclusion in professional rodeos and connect enthusiasts across the country. In 2024, after more than five decades at the helm, Mr. Feist sold Ropers Sports News to Dee Yates, who transformed it into a glossy magazine format.
In the 1960's he served as an infantry officer in the United States Army. While attending Oklahoma State University, Mr. Feist was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho (Pi). His professional journey began with two decades as a professional team roper. His early experiences in rodeo included bull riding; however, he soon realized that roping offered greater longevity and opportunity within the sport. His competitive background provided firsthand insight into the needs of rodeo athletes and informed his later efforts as an advocate and promoter.
Alongside his competitive pursuits, Mr. Feist has been deeply involved in ranching throughout his life. Raised on family ranches in Ukiah and Lockeford, California, he developed a lifelong passion for horses and the Western lifestyle. He has also enjoyed a long-standing career as a commentator and announcer for professional team roping events and rodeos, a role he began while still in high school. Mr. Feist's expertise and engaging style have made him a sought-after voice at major competitions nationwide. Notably, he served as announcer for events such as the Bud Light Cowboy Downhill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the National Finals PRCA Rodeo and Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Finals.
Throughout his career, Mr. Feist has been featured in event catalogs and yearbooks as well as at various roping and rodeo events. He is a lifetime member of both the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and ProRodeo, organizations that reflect his enduring commitment to the sport.
Civically engaged throughout his life, Mr. Feist has participated in numerous charitable initiatives, including fundraising for cancer charities. He has been involved with organizations such as Los Rancheros Visitadores. where he served as president and was a member of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo board. Mr. Feist has also participated in events such as the George Strait Vaqueros del Mar Golf Tournament.
Mr. Feist's career has earned widespread recognition within the Western sports community. In addition, Mr. Feist has received the Ken Stemler Pioneer Award from the ProRodeo Hall of Fame & Museum of the American Cowboy, and was named Resistol Man of the Year in 2025, reflecting his lasting influence on the sport.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Feist credits his success to his faith and the values instilled by supportive parents who encouraged him to mentor young people and foster new businesses. He believes that when introduced to something new, it is important to evaluate it with an open mind, even if one's initial reaction is unfavorable. Drawing on his World War II experiences, Mr. Feist recalls the hardships endured by families during that era and warns that people today often overlook the value of what they have, forgetting that in another time, resources were far scarcer and less appreciated.
Outside his professional endeavors, Mr. Feist enjoys flying airplanes and fishing during his leisure time. He takes pride in promoting family values through ranching and equestrian activities, emphasizing responsibility, good manners and positive growth among young people involved with horses. Looking ahead, Mr. Feist hopes to remain active within his community while continuing to help others pursue their goals, carrying forward a legacy rooted in mentorship, integrity and dedication to both tradition and progress within Western sports culture.
