Mr. Unger's most extensive professional experience stems from nearly four decades of service in the United States Navy, where he held numerous roles from 1976 to 2015. Rising to the rank of captain with the Marine Corps Installations Command in Washington, D.C., from 2012 to 2015, he also served as command chaplain at the Marine Corps Training Center in 29 Palms, California and regimental combat team 3 of the 3rd Marine Regiment in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, including deployment to Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009. He was stationed at the chapel at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, with deployments to the Philippines and Korea between 2006 and 2008.
His earlier assignments included service with Coalition Joint Task Force 7 at Camp Victory in Iraq; the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in Cherry Point, North Carolina from 1999 to 2001; Chaplain of Destroyer Squadron Two in the Mediterranean and Adriatic; III Marine Expeditionary Force; chaplain aboard USS Shiloh (CG-67) in the Persian Gulf in 1992; surface warfare officer on USS Taurus (PHM-3) from 1985 to 1986; surface warfare officer on USS Independence (CV-62) during operations off Beirut, Lebanon from 1982 to 1983 and in the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean from 1984 to 1985. Captain Unger was comissioned as an Ensign in Febuary 1982.
Throughout his military career, Mr. Unger's most notable achievement was ministering to Marines and soldiers as a Navy chaplain. This work stands as a testament to his dedication to the spiritual welfare of service members during times of conflict and peace alike.
Mr. Unger is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Legislative Exchange Council and serves as legislative affairs officer for the Military Officers Association of America. His commitment extends into civic life as an active member of Christ Community Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas; volunteer with NCPTF and Washington County Search and Rescue since 2019; board member for Bethany Christian Services in Springdale from 2018 to 2019; reserve sheriff's deputy for Benton County; volunteer search and rescue ground technician for Washington County Search and Rescue Team; member of Rotary Club of Springdale; and member of American Legion in Springdale.
His exemplary service has been recognized through numerous awards, including the Legion of Merit, three Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, multiple campaign awards for overseas deployments and the Lion's Eye Bank Award.
Mr. Unger's academic background includes a Master of Military Science from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, earned in 2002; a Master of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, completed in 1990; and a Bachelor of Science in public administration from the University of Arkansas, awarded in 1981. He is also an ordained chaplain. These educational achievements have provided him with a strong foundation for both his military leadership roles and legislative responsibilities.
He attributes his success to his faith in God and the steadfast support of his wife, Mary Lynette Madden Unger, values that continue to guide his public service efforts.
