Ms. Marlin has demonstrated distinguished and impactful career in nursing and community health, marked by her unwavering commitment to serving unserved and underserved populations. Since 1987, she has been the founder, owner and chief executive officer of Primary Health Care of Charlotte P.A., where she has dedicated herself to providing accessible wellness care in Charlotte. In this capacity, she manages all aspects of the organization, including housekeeping, accounting and bookkeeping, while also performing physicals and assessments for college students and individuals in need within the inner city. She is recognized for working 10 hours a day, four days a week, ensuring that the clinic remains a resource for those who might otherwise lack access to essential health services.
A hallmark of Ms. Marlin's professional journey is her expertise as an advanced practice nurse and sexual assault nurse examiner. Her leadership at Primary Health Care of Charlotte P.A. has spanned thirty-nine years, during which time she has focused on empowering patients by returning the value of wellness care to their hands rather than solely relying on providers. Among her most significant achievements is her work establishing birth records for homeless individuals who previously lacked documentation due to the destruction of records at the first Black hospital in the U.S. This initiative not only restored vital records but also enabled many to secure housing and food, underscoring her dedication to holistic community support to promote wellness.
Prior to founding her clinic, Ms. Marlin served as a nursing instructor in the associate degree in nursing and licensed practical nurse programs from 1978 to 1984. In this role, she contributed to the education and development of future nurses, sharing her knowledge across various hospital departments, including emergency room, obstetrics, labor and delivery, pediatrics, intensive care, neonatal intensive care and community nursing with the public health department.
Ms. Marlin's professional excellence has been recognized through several honors. She was accepted into the Leadership Academy of the North Carolina Nurses Association, an honor reserved for approximately twenty-five out of 10 thousand nurses annually. Additionally, her work was featured in Natural Awakenings for nearly four decades of community service through free health care events organized by Primary Health Care of Charlotte, P.A.
Academically, Ms. Marlin's foundation includes a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a parent-child clinical nurse specialist from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Beyond her formal training, she attributes her success to her faith and adherence to spiritual principles, guided by the verse from Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and courageous." This guiding philosophy has influenced both her professional endeavors and personal life.
Beyond her clinical work, Ms. Marlin is deeply involved in civic and faith-based organizations. She serves as an ordained pastor at Antioch International Church and was ordained as minister at Nations Ford Community Church.
Her commitment to global health is evident through volunteer service on six nursing mission trips to Gonaïves and Port-au-Prince in Haiti, Lusaka in Zambia, Bethlehem and Jerusalem in Israel. Locally, she volunteers with the Mecklenburg Council of Elders by providing free care, educational classes and physical assessments during expungement events.
Throughout her career, Ms. Marlin's contributions have been acknowledged with numerous awards, including the Broadcasting Excellence Award from WDRB Media, the Community Catalyst Award from The Urban League of Central Carolinas, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Grant, the Women of Legacy recognition from Nations Ford Community Church and a certificate of appreciation from the North Carolina Department of Correction and Prison Ministry. She also received scholarships for both bachelor's and master's degree Programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte through the United States Public Health Professional Nurse Training Act. In 1985, she earned second place for a North Carolina nursing research study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ms. Marlin's creative outreach includes hosting Wellness Wholeness Holiness, a television show on Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Access Corporation for thirty-four years. Through his platform, she educates viewers on health and wellness topics. She seeks to love her neighbor without partiality, as she loves herself, and love the Lord with all her heart, soul, mind and strength.
In her personal life, Ms. Marlin is devoted to her family as a mother to two sons and enjoys gardening and arranging flowers for nursing banquets and church events in her free time. In the upcoming years, she intends to expand her practice internationally by partnering with a 100% Environmental Green Company to provide physicals for employees and communities in South America and Africa. To promote healthy communities/villages the last two songs the LORD gave her sums up her life: "I will love YOU, Sweet JESUS, Today", and "Wellness, Wholeness, Holiness."
