GREENSBORO, NC, March 05, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Joy A. Gottshall with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mrs. Gottshall celebrates many years' experience in her professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Gottshall, a distinguished school psychologist, has dedicated nearly five decades to advancing the field of educational psychology in North Carolina. Her expertise in working with and assessing students is widely recognized, and her commitment to professional development and mentorship has left a lasting impact on colleagues and aspiring psychologists alike.
Since 1983, Ms. Gottshall has served as a school psychologist with Guilford County Schools. Over her distinguished tenure, she has become an integral part of the district's support system, consulting with teachers and curriculum facilitators, supervising interns, preparing staff development programs and maintaining National Certified School Psychologist certification standards for the School Psychology Department. Ms. Gottshall oversees the procurement of assessment protocols and new test materials, manages testing kits and related resources and ensures all preparations for her student assessments are meticulously handled. She also plays a pivotal role in staff professional development, submitting courses for approval, tracking attendance and managing certifications through the National Association of School Psychologists. Ms. Gottshall's initiative led Guilford County Schools to become the first system in North Carolina to offer professional development credits, streamlining staff certification renewals for the NCSP certification.
A hallmark of Ms. Gottshall's career is her dedication to mentoring future psychologists. She supervises four interns annually, dedicating Tuesdays exclusively to their training. These interns rotate among four staff members each quarter, gaining exposure to various stages of psychological practice, including pre-kindergarten assessment, counseling rotations, working in public separate schools for students with significant needs, and support for students new to the country. Ms. Gottshall values this mentorship deeply, believing that seasoned professionals are best equipped to guide those entering the field.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Gottshall served as a school psychologist for the Person County School District from 1978 to 1983. In this capacity, she provided psychological services across multiple schools, collaborating with educators and administrators to enhance student outcomes. Ms. Gottshall's career began in 1977 with Caswell County Schools and Person County Schools, where she served as a school psychologist for one year in that regional position. This foundational experience allowed her to develop essential skills in student assessment and intervention planning.
Ms. Gottshall's academic journey began at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Greensboro, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology before completing a Master of Arts in school psychology in 1978. The strong work ethic instilled by her parents during her upbringing was instrumental in shaping her approach to education and professional life. After initially pursuing graduate studies elsewhere due to family circumstances, Ms. Gottshall returned to UNC Greensboro upon learning about its newly established school psychology program, a decision that set the course for her distinguished career. She credits both her parents and a former supervisor who remains an influential presence in her life as key inspirations.
Ms. Gottshall's influence extends beyond her immediate work environment through active membership in the National Association of School Psychologists. She has also held leadership roles as secretary, treasurer and president for two terms within the North Carolina School Psychology Association. During her work within the North Carolina School Psychology Association, Ms. Gottshall played a crucial role in planning annual fall conferences by contributing to both facilities management and programming development. Additionally, after a decade-long effort by school psychologists statewide to have their salaries reclassified to reflect their advanced training requirements, she led the decision to hire a lobbyist. This pivotal move led to a salary reclassification within six months.
Throughout her career, Ms. Gottshall has been recognized for excellence and leadership. In 2022, she was named Psychologist of the Year by Guilford County Schools, a testament to her enduring contributions and commitment to student well-being. She considers her lifelong dedication to school psychology as her greatest professional achievement. Looking ahead, Ms. Gottshall aims to reach 50 years of service while continuing to make meaningful contributions in her schools.
