BRONX, NY, March 09, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Father Brian E. McWeeney, D.Min, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Father McWeeney most recently served as director of the Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the Archdiocese of New York from 2013 until his retirement in 2025. In this capacity, he managed interfaith and ecumenical relations, engaging with a diverse array of religious leaders, including ministers, rabbis and imams. His responsibilities included representing the cardinal at community service events, facilitating interfaith initiatives and supporting ethnic apostolates. He played a pivotal role in welcoming individuals from various backgrounds, particularly those from South and Central America, and was instrumental in organizing Hispanic Masses. Father McWeeney's commitment to fostering dialogue extended to his longstanding collaboration with Lutheran communities on housing initiatives for those in need, a partnership that spanned more than three decades. His efforts were recognized by the Lutherans, who established the Brian McWeeney Center for Education and Culture Change, and by the Knights of Columbus, which created the Brian McWeeney Award to honor priests who exemplify service to both church and community.
From 2011 to 2013, Father McWeeney served as director of adult faith formation in the Archdiocese of New York. In this role, he developed and conducted seminars on adult faith education and theology and moral theology. He was dedicated to ensuring that adults had access to comprehensive religious education and encouraged active participation in faith communities.
Between 2008 and 2011, Father McWeeney served as pastor at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church. During his tenure, he oversaw significant church construction projects, managing both building and renewal efforts that reflected his vision as a priest and pastor. He emphasized creating a family atmosphere within the parish, ensuring that all members felt connected to God's love and encouraging them to take responsibility for their own faith as well as that of others.
Earlier in his career, following his ordination in 1973, Father McWeeney taught educators in religious education and spent over thirteen years instructing candidates in the Catholic diaconate program. His teaching experience spanned undergraduate and graduate levels, including two years at Monsignor Farrell High School on Staten Island. He also conducted seminars for adult learners on various aspects of religion.
Father McWeeney's expertise led him to serve as an auditor for annulments, where Cardinal Egan recommended him to Rome to become a rescript judge. Although he did not possess identical academic credentials as some peers, his qualifications were deemed equivalent for judging ecclesiastical cases. Additionally, he was responsible for overseeing details surrounding the 9/11 memorial during the Holy Father's visit. He had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis during Buddhist-Catholic dialogue sessions in Castel Gandolfo.
Throughout his career, Father McWeeney has been an active member of several industry-related organizations. He participated in significant religious discussions through the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, with a particular focus on Catholic-Jewish dialogue. He also served as New York State chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.
Father McWeeney's academic background has been foundational to his professional achievements. He earned a Doctor of Ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1997, which provided advanced theological training that informed his leadership roles within the archdiocese. He completed a master's degree in education with a focus on pastoral counseling at Iona University, equipping him with skills essential for guiding both parishioners and clergy. His earlier studies include a Master of Divinity from St. Joseph's Seminary and College in Dunwoody in 1972 and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from St. Joseph's Seminary and College in 1969.
His civic involvement includes board memberships with both Carmelite Healthcare System and Lutheran Care Network, reflecting his commitment to service beyond parish boundaries.
Father McWeeney is also recognized for his contributions to religious scholarship. He authored "The History of Cathedral College" in 1978 and wrote commemorative histories for Sacred Heart Church in Staten Island, including its centennial publication in 1975. His expertise has made him a sought-after source for broadcast stations and newspapers on theological matters.
His dedication has been acknowledged through numerous awards, including induction into the Hall of Fame at Our Lady of Lourdes and being named Man of the Year by both the Knights of Columbus and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
On a personal level, Father McWeeney values family deeply. Raised alongside his sister by parents who placed a strong emphasis on education, despite having limited formal schooling themselves, he credits their support for shaping his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and service. His grandparents immigrated from Ireland, providing a foundation rooted in resilience and faith.
In retirement, Father McWeeney enjoys traveling and remains committed to fostering environments where people can come together harmoniously to share ideas and build community free from negativity or discouragement.
