As part of his responsibilities, Mr. Babits represented Shell plc in engagements with various government agencies and ensured compliance with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations. Earlier in his career, Mr. Babits served with the SEC in Washington, DC, in various capacities. From 1991 to 1997, he held the positions of attorney-advisor and special counsel within the Division of Corporate Finance. His contributions encompassed involvement in internet interpretive releases and providing legal guidance on SEC accounting issues – accomplishments that remain a source of pride. Following this appointment, Mr. Babits dedicated one year as an associate in the securities group at Morgan Lewis & Bockius before resuming his role at the SEC as a special counsel in the Office of Chief Counsel.
Subsequently, Mr. Babits served as counsel to Commissioner Isaac C. Hunt at the SEC from 1999 to 2002. Thereafter, he rejoined the Division of Corporate Finance, where he contributed to the negotiation of corporate governance regulations for the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ. This period was particularly significant as he was the principal drafter of the SEC's non-GAAP regulatory framework. In recognition of his exemplary professional achievements, Mr. Babits was bestowed with the Capital Market Award by the SEC. He also dedicated time as a faculty member of the Practicing Law Institute's seminar on global capital markets and U.S. securities law.
Highly educated, Mr. Babits obtained a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1985 and a Master of Business Administration in finance and investments in 1988, both from The George Washington University. In 1991, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University, where he was also a member of the university's law review. Prior to law school, Mr. Babits initially gained valuable experience as a financial systems programmer and systems analyst at MCI.
As a testament to his success, Mr. Babits has received numerous accolades. In 2024, he was designated as the Lawyer of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals, and his biography has been published in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes magazine and Fortune magazine.
