Celebrating a distinguished 50-year career, Dr. Call retired from full-time work in drug development and project management at Call and Warwick Project Partners in 2018. Through this organization, which he established in 2009, he offered project management and clinical research training to pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations.
Prior to project management consulting with Call and Warwick Project Partners, Dr. Call spent 14 years at Quintiles Inc, the world's largest contract clinical research organization. Starting as a senior project manager, he was later promoted to global head of the project management support office and then executive director of global technical training. In this position, he led a team of 80 professionals on five continents providing detailed training in clinical research operations, data management and project and risk management training to Quintile's project teams worldwide. Before his time at Quintiles, Dr. Call was program director of the Duke Center for Living, part of the Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Call began his professional career in 1968 when he was commissioned as a U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps officer. For the next quarter-century, he served as a Navy Aerospace Physiologist in seven different assignments that included providing safety and survival training for Navy and Marine Corps aircrew, conducting research, development, test and evaluation projects of Navy aircrew life support equipment both ashore and at aboard Navy ships. In one of those assignments, he qualified as a Navy Test Parachutist and completed over 200 free-fall parachute jumps while testing new items of aircrew escape and recovery systems. In 1987, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as Commanding Officer of the Navy Biodynamics Laboratory in New Orleans, LA. There, he led a Navy command of civilian and military scientists, engineers, technicians and Navy enlisted personnel conducting biomedical research on ways to prevent head and neck injuries and ship motion induced illness in Navy personnel during operations at sea and in flight. As the senior command executive, he was responsible for command research productivity, quality, and budget plus coordinating joint programs with other military research organizations and collaborative projects with the University of New Orleans.
He completed his distinguished Naval career in 1992 retiring as a Captain. Among his many military awards were: Legion of Merit Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Navy Commendation Medal; two National Defense Medals; Command Ashore Insignia, Naval Aerospace Physiologist Wings, (2,000+ hours in tactical, patrol and transport aircraft), and Naval Test Parachutist Wings, (201 free-fall jumps).
Captain Call's other professional awards and accolades include: Outstanding Naval Aerospace Physiologist Award and the Paul Bert Research Award from the Aerospace Physiologist Society; Fellow in Aerospace Medicine from the Aerospace Medical Association; Lifetime Achievement Award and the Safety Excellence Award from the SAFE (Survival and Flight Equipment) Association, Citation for Exceptional Teaching, Arizona State University and Military Citizen of the Year of Ventura County, California. He has also earned professional certifications in Aerospace Physiology and as a Project Management Professional.
Before embarking on his professional career, Dr. Call obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Ferris State University in 1964. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in anatomy and medical physiology from the University of Louisville in 1970. Following his academic pursuits, he has remained dedicated to scholarly activities via authoring over 30 numerous scientific articles in professional journals, and making over 90 presentations on aerospace physiology, project management, drug development and human factors engineering in national and international professional conferences. He has also received appointments as an adjunct or visiting professor at the University of Southern California, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach FL, Arizona State University, Tempe Arizona, the University of New Orleans, and Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Buies Creek, NC. He has been a faculty member for the of the Drug Information Association for several years teaching drug development course for pharmaceutical professionals throughout North and South America and Europe.
Dr. Call has been honored with "Distinguished Alumnus" Awards from Reed City High School, Reed City, MI, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI and the University of Louisville, Louisville, KY.
To stay current with developments in his fields, Dr. Call has maintained membership/affiliations with several professional/service organizations: SAFE (Survival and Flight Equipment) Association (President 1982) Aerospace Physiology Society, (President 1988); Aerospace Medical Association; Project Management Institute (President, North Carolina Chapter 2000); Association of Naval Aviation; the U.S. Naval Institute and the American Legion.
Renowned for his civic-minded contributions, Dr. Call has been a construction volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Orange County, NC since 2012, served on their Board of Directors for six years and was named Volunteer of the Year Orange County, NC 2019. He has also helped build homes in Honduras and Guatemala with Habitat teams.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Call is a devoted husband and father of two adult children. His favorite pastimes include photography, hiking, reading, traveling, gardening and teaching ESL (English as Second Language) to Spanish speakers at his church. While maintaining his involvement with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, he is also embracing retirement. He aspires to establish a legacy of leadership in his varied disciplines by prioritizing the professional development of his colleagues and mentees and through varied community service efforts.
