Mr. Bythewood's influence has extended into academia, where he has served as an adjunct professor at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, contributing to legal education with distinction. In addition to his legal career, Mr. Bythewood has maintained licensure as a funeral director since 1969, a profession he initially entered through his parents' funeral home before pursuing law due to its multidisciplinary nature.
Dedicated to his country, Mr. Bythewood's commitment to service was reflected in his honorable discharge from the United States Army in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, in 1969 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, in 1981. He also graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City. Mr. Bythewood was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Districts of New York between 1984 and 2019. He was also admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1989 and by the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Claims Court, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, all in 1990.
Throughout his career, Mr. Bythewood has been an active member of several professional organizations, including serving on the board of directors of the Long Beach Lawyers' Association since 2009, and membership in the New York State Bar Association and the Nassau County Bar Association. He also served as the vice chair of the trial techniques committee within the tort and insurance practice section of the American Bar Association. Among other affiliations, Mr. Bythewood is a member of the 100 Black Men of America Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi. Meanwhile, his civic engagement includes a lifetime membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Among Mr. Bythewood's most notable professional achievements was his role in the Joseph Gambino matter, widely known as the Gas Scam Trial, which garnered coverage by The New York Times and stands as a significant highlight of his career. Another case of personal significance was Jackson Terrace Associates v. Rice, in which he represented indigent Section 8 clients, Davie and Hattie Rice. In this matter, Mr. Bythewood successfully defeated both a greedy landlord and a possibly corrupt the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to secure a substantial win for his clients, setting an important precedent regarding unemployment benefits and tenant rent calculations.
Mr. Bythewood's legal accomplishments also include successfully defending Times Mirror Company and its subsidiary Newsday, as well as the Nassau County Board of Elections. He has prosecuted numerous discrimination lawsuits, notably compelling New York State's Roslyn School District to adopt its first anti-discrimination policy in 2008. Additionally, Mr. Bythewood as a member of the Board of Directors of United Service Organizations of Greater New York (U.S.O.) forced and produced its March 2006 dinner honoring the Tuskegee Airmen and posthumously celebrating Eleanor Roosevelt.
Mr. Bythewood has appeared as a legal commentator for Court TV, Good Day New York, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. He is also noted for his creative contributions, including a Grammy nomination for the cover photography of Herbie Hancock's album "Speak Like a Child," released in 1968. He also acted as a consultant for Alhagie Ahmed Tijan Kabbah when Kabbah was elected president of Sierra Leone and, also, at the request of Libya, became that country's lawyer in the USA in 1997.
