Since 2025, he has served as the deputy fire chief for Cannon Fire & Emergency Services at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico, where he manages the agency through four assistant fire chiefs. He oversees operations and service delivery, training and development of firefighters and the community, fire prevention and education, code enforcement and life-safety inspections, forecasts budgets and capital outlays, secures funding for daily operations, and leads strategic planning and community risk assessments. He is also responsible for establishing response standards and protocol aligned with community needs.
Prior to his current role, Chief Berry held the position of installation fire chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services from 2024 to 2025, where he directed all aspects of the department's mission and ensured compliance with federal regulations. From 2022 to 2024, he served as deputy fire chief at the same installation, focusing on administrative oversight and operational readiness. In 2021, Chief Berry was appointed fire chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services, leading the department through significant organizational changes and emergency responses.
Between 2019 and 2021, Chief Berry was deputy fire chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services, where he played a pivotal role in departmental management and policy development culminating in the department earning the Chief Master Sergeant Ralph E. Sanborn Award for the Department of Defense's Best Medium Fire Department of the Year for 2021. He previously served as acting fire chief from 2018 to 2019, providing continuity during leadership transitions and maintaining high standards of service delivery.
Before his tenure at Cannon Air Force Base, Chief Berry was assistant fire chief for prevention at Fort Wainwright Fire Department from 2016 to 2018 in Fairbanks, Alaska. In this capacity, he led fire prevention initiatives and safety programs for the installation. From 2015 to 2016, he was deputy chief of operations for Edwards Fire Emergency Services in California, overseeing emergency response strategies and personnel management.
Chief Berry's earlier roles include superintendent of fire emergency services and emergency management for the United States Air Force from 2013 to 2015. He was responsible for integrating emergency management protocols across multiple units and was part of the 12 member team that moved the Pacific Air Forces Silver Flag Exercise site from Kadena Air Base Okinawa, Japan to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. In 2012, he served as deputy fire chief for the United States Air Force Protection at Royal Air Force (RAF) Base Lakenheath in the United Kingdom, contributing to operational planning and resource allocation.
In addition to these roles, Chief Berry's international experience includes serving as a North Atlantic Treaty Organization senior fire emergency services adviser and mentor in Afghanistan RC-South from 2010 to 2011, where he provided guidance on emergency response procedures in a combat environment to the all Afghanistan member fire department. In 2010, he excelled as the assistant fire chief for operations for RAF Lakenheath's Fire and Emergency Services supporting the 48th Fighter Wing "Liberty Wing" and combat readiness of F-15 Strike Eagle squadrons.
From 2009 to 2010, Chief Berry held the position of battalion chief of operations with the United States Air Force Fire Protection. He also contributed significantly as an instructor supervisor for the advanced rescue technician course at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy in San Angelo, Texas, from 2007 to 2009. His instructional expertise spanned 2006 to 2007 as an instructor for the advanced rescue technician course and 2005 to 2006 as an instructor for structural firefighting principles.
Earlier in his career, Chief Berry served as crew chief and company fire officer with Fire and Emergency Services at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi from 2002 to 2005 and as station chief of operations from 2002 to 2003. He gained foundational experience as a driver operator from 1999 to 2002 at Eilson Air Force Base, Alaska, and again in 2000 while deployed to Kuwait. His initial years were spent as a firefighter with the United States Air Force Fire Protection fire department at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico from 1997 to 1999.
Chief Berry is an active member of several professional organizations, including serving as a peer reviewer for the Center for Public Safety Excellence Commission on Professional Credentialing since 2018 and as a member of the Fire Department Safety Officers Association since 2018. Additionally, he has been associated with the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association since 2017, and with the Veterans of Foreign Wars since 2016.
Education has been instrumental in shaping Chief Berry's leadership approach and technical proficiency. In 2023, he completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy, a milestone he regards as the pinnacle of his career, given its rigorous curriculum focused on executive-level leadership in the fire service. Previously, he earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 2017, following a bachelor's degree in fire service management from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, awarded in 2009.
Chief Berry's technical training began with his graduation from the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, in 1997. He later earned two associate degrees, in Instructor of Military Technology and in Fire Science, both from the Community College of the Air Force in Montgomery, Alabama, in 2006, further strengthening his expertise in military and fire service instruction.
Beyond his formal education, Chief Berry holds numerous professional certifications, including the Chief Fire Officer designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence since 2017. He maintains credentials as Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector III, Fire Instructor III, Health and Safety Officer, Incident Safety Officer, Incident Command System 300/400, and Hazardous Materials Incident Commander through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. He is also certified as a Professional Manager and Occupational Instructor by the Community College of the Air Force and as a Master Instructor by Air Education and Training Command, among numerous other qualifications.
Reflecting on his career, Chief Berry attributes his success to hard work, determination and personal responsibility. He also credits continual learning, a positive mindset, resilience in the face of adversity and the guidance of strong mentors — qualities that have enabled him not only to achieve excellence but also to sustain it over decades of service.
Chief Berry's dedication extends to active civic engagement and volunteerism. He has supported local charities, including Lighthouse Missions and The Salvation Army, and has coached youth sports and served on committees and plenary boards for Earth Day initiatives. Additionally, he has mentored students at DoDEA Guam High School and the Airman Leadership School, volunteered as a Den Leader with Scouting America and contributed to woodworking programs within the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.
Known for his exemplary service, Chief Berry has received numerous honors, including the Category III Civilian of the Year Award from both the 27th Special Operations Wing and Air Force Special Operations Command. He has also received the Meritorious Service Medal (412th Test Wing), the Military Fire Officer of the Year Award from both Air Force Materiel Command and U.S. Air Forces Europe and the Department of Defense Fire Department of the Year 2021 recognition, among other distinctions.
Born in Austin, Chief Berry enjoys riding motorcycles, spending time outdoors on his seventy-acre property and coaching baseball, soccer and wrestling. Looking ahead, he intends to pursue future fire chief opportunities, including civilian roles, while continuing his professional development through advanced leadership and executive education programs. Chief Berry aspires to relocate to Albuquerque, where he hopes to serve at Kirtland Air Force Base and explore entrepreneurial ventures, including developing an RV park, a bed-and-breakfast and a wedding venue.
