LECOMPTON, KS, March 11, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Paul M. Bahnmaier has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting his community's rich national history, Mr. Bahnmaier has served as president of Historic Lecompton Kansas since 1982. As head of the Lecompton Historical Society, he oversees the operations of key historical monuments including the Territorial Capital Museum, the 1850s Democratic Headquarters and the 1892 City Jail. Under his leadership, the society has become a hub for historical education, drawing visitors and students alike to learn about Lecompton's pivotal role in United States history and the events that shaped the nation.
A significant aspect of Mr. Bahnmaier's tenure has been his dedication to sharing lesser-known stories from Lecompton's past. He takes particular pride in recounting how, during the 1858 election, two national political parties carried the name "Lecompton National" at a time when Kansas had not yet achieved statehood. One of these groups, The People's Anti-Democratic Party, succeeded in electing eight members to Congress from states including New Jersey, New York, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Notably, the Lecompton Democrats also elected the governor of California that year — a remarkable achievement that remains largely unrecognized outside of historical circles.
Mr. Bahnmaier is also well-versed in the tumultuous events surrounding the Lecompton Constitution, including the infamous altercation in the House of Representatives in December 1857 that contributed to a split within the Democratic Party and ultimately influenced Abraham Lincoln's election as president.
Alongside his preservation and educational efforts with the Lecompton Historical Society, Mr. Bahnmaier devoted nearly 40 years to teaching sixth grade. Marked by his passion for working with young people and fostering their interest in history and civic engagement, he maintains connections with many of his former students, some of whom return to visit the museum with their families. Among his former pupils is an individual who played a key role in President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign — an accomplishment that underscores Mr. Bahnmaier's influence as a mentor and educator.
Hailing from an accomplished academic background of his own, Mr. Bahnmeier earned a Master of Education as well as a Bachelor of Education, both from Emporia State University. The values instilled in him by his parents, who were active on the school board, involved with the United Methodist Church and engaged in numerous community activities, inspired him to pursue a career dedicated to service and education.
In recognition of his decades of outstanding contributions, Mr. Bahnmeier received the Governor's Tourism Award from Governor Laura Kelly through Kansas Tourism in 2019. He regards this honor as a testament not only to his own efforts but also to those of all volunteers who have and continue to support the Lecompton Historical Society.
Born and raised in Lecompton, Mr. Bahnmaier and his family are deeply rooted in the community's history. His ancestor arrived in Lecompton from Germany in 1855, initially living in a dugout before working as a tailor during the territorial period. When most residents left after the capital moved from Lecompton, his family chose to remain and farm their land — a proud tradition that continues today.
Outside of his professional commitments, Mr. Bahnmaier is an avid sports fan who has held season tickets for football since 1966 and for basketball since 1976. Looking toward the future, he remains committed to ensuring that Lecompton's national significance — particularly its impact on President Lincoln's election and American history — is recognized more broadly. Through documentation and public engagement, he continues to advocate for greater awareness of Douglas County's crucial role in shaping the historical legacy of the United States.
