HOUSTON, TX, March 12, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John L. Maida Jr., a chief scientific advisor, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the February/March 2026 Houston, Texas, regional issue of Forbes magazine.
Mr. Maida, an accomplished advisor specializing in optical sensor physics, draws on over 35 years of professional experience in scientific research, engineering and implementation. Since 2025, he has served as chief scientific advisor (CSA), where he provides consulting services to disseminate his extensive knowledge and experience with clients seeking his expertise in sensing systems. Prior to this appointment as CSA, Mr. Maida was the chief optical scientist for 22 years within the Fiber Optic Sensing Technology Center of Excellence at Halliburton in Houston, Texas, advancing smart wellbore monitoring systems development in oil and gas production, hydrogen and CO2 storage, and geothermal energy applications.
Mr. Maida has remarkably earned more than 130 U.S. and international patents, receiving his first patent in 1991. His exceptional career has been achieved through serving in highly successful roles of increasing responsibility, resulting in mastery of breadth, depth, and leadership in the field of optical sensor physics. Immediately following the completion of his graduate degree in 1987, Mr. Maida kick-started his career at Teledyne Ryan Electronics, and from there, he served as senior fiber optics project engineer at Litton-Dresser Western Geophysical/Input-Output from 1991 to 1996, CGG Sercel-Syntron GeoSciences from 1996 to 2000, and CiDRA-Weatherford from 2000 to 2003.
In addition to his full-time career roles, Mr. Maida successfully took on leadership roles outside of work to further contribute his expertise, passion, and mentorship to his field of study. Lending his expertise to academia, Mr. Maida held a longstanding position at the University of Houston, where he was an adjunct professor of optical fiber circuits within the College of Technology from 2006 through 2024. After his teaching appointment, Mr. Maida contributed to the third edition of the textbook, "Fiber Optic Sensors: An Introduction for Engineers and Scientists," published by John Wiley & Sons Inc. in 2024. Additional experiences include his role as a post-graduate junior electro-optics engineer at his alma mater, The University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and as a director of American enterprise, mentoring students pursuing careers in STEM disciplines at Teledyne Ryan.
Mr. Maida is now working on vital consulting projects and developing patents to improve society's understanding of science and emerging technologies. With a steadfast commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators, he continues to explore front-end sensory mechanisms for artificial intelligence.
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Mr. Maida earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical and electronics technology in 1984 at the University of Houston. He further pursued a second Bachelor of Science in electro-optical engineering physics and graduated magna cum laude in 1986. From there, Mr. Maida completed his post-graduate degree in 1987, earning a Master of Science in electro-optical engineering physics.
MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
Mr. Maida has served as the vice chair of the University of Houston and Rice University IEEE Photonics Society. Additionally, he is a member of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the International Society for Optics and Photonics. He has also worked as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, for the National Photonics Initiative's Task Force on sensors for energy, environment and education.
