Mr. Clubb is well-regarded for his expertise in avionics technologies, having served at the forefront of the aerospace industry during the revolutionary "frontier era" of space exploration. From 1963 until his retirement in 2008, he worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in numerous key roles, lending his knowledge to such pioneering projects as the International Space Station and the Hubble Telescope. Upon being hired by NASA in the early 1960s, Mr. Clubb was assigned to the Avionics Integration Division, tasked with working on the Saturn family of launch vehicles. He also served as a member of the Dr. Wernher von Braun team and the Apollo program, steadfast in the program's mission to send a man to the Moon.
Throughout his nearly 50-year career with NASA, Mr. Clubb held several pivotal positions, including the division chief of the Astrionics Laboratory, the avionics architect for the International Space Station, and an international partner for avionics integration. Experiencing a myriad of achievements in the field, he was instrumental in helping to develop a unique coding system for the Hubble Space Telescope that ensured the scientific data was received without error. In addition, he aided in the design of flight hardware and software for launch vehicles, satellites and the International Space Station. Spending the lattermost 14 years of his NASA career as a member of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, he was notable for ensuring the major space station modules functioned properly once integrated together in orbit. Likewise, he is particularly grateful to have collaborated with Russian astronauts and engineers on the International Space Station for more than 10 years. In his post-retirement years, Mr. Clubb served as a consultant for NASA until 2019. He emphasizes that he feels fortunate to have arrived at the frontier stage of space activities and contributed to the worldwide mission to travel to the Moon.
Testifying to his resounding success, longevity in the industry and unparalleled expertise, Mr. Clubb was celebrated with several honors. To wit, he accepted three NASA Exceptional Service Medals, the NASA Outstanding Manager Medal and the Silver Snoopy Medal, which was bestowed upon him by astronauts for his contributions to their safety. Prior to joining NASA, Mr. Clubb attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the Missouri School of Mines), receiving a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1959. Following this achievement, he served in the United States Army for two years until his honorable discharge, at which point he spent one additional year as a civilian employee. Notably, he served as a member of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, during which time he discovered that NASA was hiring full-time engineers. From that point forward, Mr. Clubb joined the organization, where he spent the remainder of his career.
Outside his professional roles, Mr. Clubb enjoys restoring antique automobiles, reading, traveling, beekeeping and gardening. He is also an avid golfer, having played at the historic St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland. He attributes much of his career success to his committed work ethic, sense of perseverance amid challenges, and unwavering enthusiasm for spaceflight and space exploration.
