Dr. Maskasky's equally accomplished academic background played a pivotal role in shaping his career trajectory. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1971, following a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1967. His postdoctoral studies at Colorado State University and Arizona State University extended his experience. Constantly seeking to expand his horizons, he holds a commercial pilot's license and is certified as a flight instructor.

The roots of Dr. Maskasky's passion for science can be traced to his early life during which he was inspired by his father, an engineer at NASA who was project manager for the development of Tyros, the United States' first weather satellite. As a child, Dr. Maskasky developed an avid interest in mineralogy, honing his ability to identify unique crystals — a skill that foreshadowed his later scientific pursuits. During high school he constructed an accelerator that earned fourth place at the 1963 International Science and Engineering Fair. His enthusiasm for experimentation laid the groundwork for his future innovations.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Maskasky has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to civic engagement and mentorship. Bringing his experiences full circle, he has served as a judge at the National Science and Engineering Fairs to support the next generation of emerging talent in scientific research. As a supporter of and donor to Case Western Reserve University, he continues to foster educational advancement within the scientific community.

In his personal life, Dr. Maskasky enjoys photographing wildlife — a passion that complements his scientific curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. He shares this pursuit with his wife Karen as they explore nature together, all while cherishing time spent with their son, daughter and five grandchildren. Looking back on his storied professional journey, he remains grateful to have led a career that allowed him to pursue what he loves while making significant and lasting contributions to science and technology.
