From 1986 to 1991, Mr. Fairbanks served as the principal of the Northern California health care consulting practice at Arthur Young in Walnut Creek, California. Through this venture, Mr. Fairbanks provided strategic financial guidance to health care institutions and established himself as a leader in the field.
In 1997, Mr. Fairbanks joined UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, as system chief financial officer for the health system until 2002. He continued as a senior finance strategist until 2004. During his tenure at UC Davis, Mr. Fairbanks played a pivotal role in elevating the institution's national standing by overseeing the construction of a new hospital and four research buildings. Under his financial stewardship, UC Davis rose into the top twenty academic medical centers nationwide.
Mr. Fairbanks continued his executive leadership as the chief financial officer and vice president of health system at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas from 2004 to 2014. There, he was responsible for all financial activities of the health system, hospitals and faculty practice plan, demonstrating his capacity for managing complex academic medical enterprises.
Over the next near decade before retiring, Mr. Fairbanks worked for Warbird Consulting Partners LLC in Atlanta as the director and senior chief financial officer consultant, the University of Mississippi Medical Center as the interim chief financial officer, and the Dameron Hospital Association as a financial consultant, further solidifying his reputation as an expert advisor within the healthcare sector. Additionally, he contributed to academia as a professor at the graduate school of defense management at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he taught business courses to Master of Business Administration students.
Highly educated, Mr. Fairbanks received a Bachelor of Science in accounting, with distinction, from Colorado State University in 1972 and a Master of Business Administration in management from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1974. He also became a certified public accountant in 1974, a credential that has underpinned his entire professional journey.
Throughout his career, Mr. Fairbanks has been recognized for his expertise in advisory board leadership and financial consulting within health care. He has delivered presentations to investors and played a critical role as a turnaround specialist, helping to raise taxes and funds, build large-scale projects, and secure strategic partnerships for health systems. Moreover, Mr. Fairbanks has been active with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants since 1974.
Mr. Fairbanks has been active civically with his local American Legion Post 512 and has held leadership roles, such as chair and board member, at Stillwater Yacht Club. He is also an advisory board member for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Marine Mammal Center, is involved with the Carmel Foundation, is a part of the Betty White Circle at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, serves on the Stellar Legacy Group at the Marine Mammal Center, and is a member of the Pebble Beach Club.
Born at Hamilton Air Force Base in San Francisco, California, Mr. Fairbanks's early life was shaped by his father's career as a U.S. Air Force officer, who also had a background in finance and later served in civil service for 25 years.
