FAIRBANKS, AK, March 23, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lawrence K. Duffy, PhD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. He was recently spotlighted in New York City's Times Square on a 22-story screen that is passed by an estimated 1.5 million people daily. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Since 1992, Dr. Duffy has been a valued faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. At his home institution, he also served as the director of the Resilience and Adaptation Program from 2013 to 2020, and several administrative appointments have shaped his academic profile; for example, from 2007 and 2012, he was the acting interim dean for the University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate school, and he was the associate dean of graduate studies and outreach for the institution's College of Natural Science and Mathematics between 2000 and 2006. Moreover, from 1994 through 1999, Dr. Duffy excelled as the head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Dr. Duffy boasts varied academic credentials and training, as well as deep experience in the field. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Fordham University before completing both a Master of Science and a PhD from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Boston University then welcomed him as a postdoctoral fellow, after which he was named a postdoctoral fellow at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. Dr. Duffy then transitioned to the University of Texas in Galveston to pursue postdoctoral coursework before enrolling in the prestigious program at Harvard Medical School to complete additional postdoctoral instruction.

Dr. Duffy has also enjoyed productive peripheral associations, including with the University of the Arctic where he served from 2007 to 2012, and with Roxbury Community College, where he taught general and organic chemistry at the rank of instructor. Notably, Harvard Medical School of Harvard University invited Dr. Duffy to join the faculty as an advanced biochemistry instructor from 1983 to 1987, and he was an esteemed assistant professor of neurology there from 1982 through 1987. Additional affiliate assignments include Dr. Duffy's lengthy tenure as the director of the Alaska Basic Neuroscience Program from 2000 to 2012.

Throughout his career, Dr. Duffy has avidly sought ways to make meaningful contributions, including serving proudly in the United States Navy Reserve at the rank of lieutenant from 1971 to 1973. He was also a member of the editorial boards for both Science of Total Environment, from 2000 to 2002, and Advances in Clinical Toxicology between 2016 and 2021, and he held a seat on the board of directors of the Alzheimer's Disease Association of Alaska, serving from 1994 to 1995 and again from 2014 to 2021; in 1999, he was appointed president of the organization. Finally, Dr. Duffy was a productive participant on the American Federation for Aging Research Science Advisory Board between 1994 and 1995 and a member of the Institutional Review Board of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital from 1987 to 1989.

Dr. Duffy has held memberships in various organizations, including The New York Academy of Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Knights of Columbus. He also values service roles such as his appointment as president of Sigma Xi in 1991 and as the associate regional director of Sigma Xi from 2000 to 2002. Between 2003 and 2018, he held a seat on the board of directors of the American Society of Circumpolar Health, and in 2008, he became the acting president of the same association. Notably, Dr. Duffy was also recognized as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and the Arctic Institute of North America.

Across his lengthy career, Dr. Duffy has been pleased to see ample diversification in the field and gratified to have enjoyed opportunities to cooperate in exciting interdisciplinary research. He attributes his success thus far to having worked with superb mentors and cites Charles Genaux as having a positive influence on his work. Moreover, he credits the skilled researchers and educators with whom he has collaborated, including Peter Morrison, Cathy Middlecamp, Alex Kurowski, T. K. Li, Dennis Selkoe and Richard Larson. In the spirit of reciprocity, Dr. Duffy plans to remain committed to partnering with students as they define their goals and advance in their desired academic and professional tracks.

Dr. Duffy counts working with students as the most rewarding aspect of his career. To this end, he was humbled to accept the Carol Fiest Outstanding Adviser Award in 1994, 1997 and 2005. Additionally, the National Institute for Deafness and Commission Disorders, a division of the National Institutes of Health, honored him with the Mentoring Certificate of Merit in 1996. Dr. Duffy has also benefitted students through his dedicated work as a member of the Curriculum Advisory Boards for both Ilisaguik College between 2014 and 2020 and Fairbanks North Star Borough School District from 2002 to 2004.

Numerous accolades have marked Dr. Duffy's varied accomplishments and contributions to academia and the chemistry field. In 1969, he won the Analytical Chemistry Award from the American Chemical Society, and in 1983, he was awarded the W.F. Milton Scholarship. He was also acknowledged by the University of Alaska Fairbanks with the Alumni Achievement Award in 1999 and the Chancellor's Diversity Award in 2011. More recent acknowledgments in response to Dr. Duffy's efforts include the Bullock Award, which was bestowed upon him by the University of Alaska in 2021, and the American Chemical Society and Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation's 2020 nod for his dedication to encouraging disadvantaged students to pursue a chemical science career. Finally, Dr. Duffy is honored to have been included in multiple editions of the Marquis Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
