Mr. Scafe has established a distinguished career spanning more than five decades in music education and television production. His professional journey is marked by a series of influential roles and ground breaking achievements that left a lasting impact on both industries.
Since 2005 and until his retirement in 2015, Mr. Scafe has served as the beginning band director for the Cherry Creek Independent School District in Denver, Colorado. In this capacity he has drawn upon his extensive background in music education to inspire and instruct young musicians, fostering their early development and appreciation for the arts. As such, Mr. Scafe taught beginning band courses on all instruments to the 4th and 5th grade students in the before and after school program.
From 1970 through early 1973, Mr. Scafe was a television producer and director for WSIU TV, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. There, he created, produced, and directed a highly regarded "live" music performance series titled "The Session." Mr. Scafe completed sixty seven half hour programs which were broadcast locally and across the Midwest. Highlights include the very first broadcast of a young Billy Joel before he became famous with his breakout "Piano Man." Also, the first televised performance of the famous rock band REO Speedwagon. In 1973 PBS selected 17 of Scafe's "The Session" programs to air nationwide as a summer series from June through November 1973.
From 1974-1977, Mr. Scafe was the co-founder and television director of Austin City Limits. A role that stands as the pinnacle of his career. Beginning with the pilot program with a relatively unknown Willie Nelson, Austin City Limits has become the world's longest running music television program. Earning international acclaim for its innovative approach to live music broadcasting. His leadership during these formative years not only shaped the program's enduring legacy, but also garnered significant recognition, including The National Medal of Arts Highest Honor for Artistic Excellence in 2003, a Chicago International Film Festival Award, an Emmy nomination, the Peabody Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mr. Scafe's work on Austin City Limits, which celebrated its 50th year of continuous production in 2024, is widely credited with influencing generations of musicians and viewers alike.
In 1977, Mr. Scafe was freelance director for "Every Tub on its Own Bottom." A jazz music pilot featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny for PBS aired as "Special of the Week."
Before his tenure with Austin City Limits, Mr. Scafe contributed his music expertise to several other schools including as a junior high school band director and music teacher for the Lake Forest, Illinois public school system. During this time he also played trumpet in the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the high school and junior high band director for the Dallas City, Illinois public school system. Mr. Scafe also taught television production and was the television producer director for Evanston Township High School, Evenson Illinois. Mr. Scafe's commitment to excellence was also demonstrated through his role as the television director for the media services division with the Texas Department of Human Services and for a brief period of time Mr. Scafe was a professional TV cameraman for WFAA-TV (ABC) Dallas, Texas. Hе also held positions with Charles Schwab and Opperheimer Funds in Denver, Colorado. During these years Mr. Scafe also played trumpet with The Colorado Jazz Workshop.
Mr. Scafe's academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1964 and a Master of Science in Radio-Television and Film in 1966 from the University of Illinois. He also holds a teaching certificate from the State of Illinois for K-12 music education. These credentials have been instrumental in supporting Mr. Scafe's multifaceted career as a musician, educator, and television producer and director. Mr. Scafe was a member of The National Association of Educational Broadcasters and The Music Educators National Conference. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity and president of the Alpha Xi Chapter at The University of Illinois.
In recognition of his work, Mr. Scafe received several accolades, including The Chicago International Film Festival Award and an Emmy Nomination for Austin City Limits. In 2014 Mr. Scafe was inducted into the West Aurora High School, Aurora, Illinois Alumni Hall of Honor for his achievements in education, music, and television. Mr. Scafe's enduring influence is evident not only in his awards and recognition but also in the many individuals whose lives have been enriched by his work in music and television.
