KATY, TX, March 27, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- George Salazar has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Salazar established a distinguished career in aerospace engineering and human systems integration, most notably through his long-standing association with NASA. His expertise in developing hardware systems for space applications and understanding the human element in complex systems has been widely recognized. In 2024, Mr. Salazar retired as a NASA engineer after a remarkable tenure. Although he never intended to work at the U.S. government agency, over time, his journey led him to spend 40 years with the organization, working his way up from a design engineer in 1983 to a human-computer interface technical discipline lead in 2014, where he remained for another 10 years. He received four patents, published over 25 technical papers, and received numerous awards, including the John F. Kennedy Astronautics Award and the NASA Silver Achievement Medal.
A major milestone early in his career was Mr. Salazar's pioneering work on the feasibility of voice-controlled spacecraft systems. Given the limited information about speech recognition technology at the time, he demonstrated initiative and ingenuity by successfully developing the system and working closely with astronauts. The outcomes of flight experiments on the voice command system during STS-41 and STS-78 marked significant achievements in his career. By overcoming numerous challenges, Mr. Salazar's efforts paved the way for further innovations in spacecraft development.
Between 1986 and 1988, Mr. Salazar served as the shuttle Modular Auxiliary Data System subsystem manager, coordinating the integration of shuttle engineering data with the contractor for shuttle missions. Later in his career, Mr. Salazar excelled as an X-38 avionics project engineer at NASA from 1996 to 1999. He led the development of the avionics for the X-38 Crew Return Vehicle fault-tolerant flight computer architecture prototype, earning recognition for his technical leadership. He later became the responsible design engineer for the Shuttle Cockpit Avionics Upgrade, which provided additional data and graphs to help astronauts control the Shuttle. His early experience as a design and project engineer from 1983 to 2005 laid the foundation for his subsequent accomplishments.
In 2006, Mr. Salazar moved into a systems engineering role for various engineering projects. From 2015 to 2024, he led the human-computer interface technical discipline, guiding key advancements in astronaut-technology interaction. He also served as the Commercial Crew Program's Display and Controls System Manager, helping develop and ensure the safety of commercial spacecraft interfaces. Additionally, from 2018 to 2024, Mr. Salazar was the computer-human interface system manager for the Artemis Human Lander System at the Johnson Space Center.
In 2013, Mr. Salazar was the co-founder of the Human Systems Integration (HSI) Employee Resource Group at NASA, Johnson Space Center, which ultimately led to the establishment of a NASA wide HSI Working Group and the inclusion of HSI requirements language in the NASA Systems Engineering and Project Management NASA Procedural Documents, as well as in handbooks, including the NASA Systems Engineering Handbook and the NASA HSI Handbook.
Before joining NASA, Mr. Salazar began his professional journey as a manufacturing engineering technologist intern at Geosource. He worked for the organization from 1980 to 1982. His role was to help ensure that the manufacturing line for sensors and cables remained operational. Mr. Salazar also worked on robotics to automate the line and developed equipment to streamline production.
