Dr. Perry is a leading researcher in the field of Alzheimer's disease who has been serving as an affiliated professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry for over 20 years at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and as former dean of the College of Sciences after serving for over 12 years at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Listed as one of the top 100 most cited scientists in neuroscience and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research, Dr. Perry has contributed over 1,500 published articles with research focusing on the areas of the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer's disease, with the hopes of developing effective treatments. Working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals, his laboratory has shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer's disease.
Currently a Semmes Foundation distinguished university chair in neurobiology, prior to his tenured position at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Perry was a professor and interim chair of the department of pathology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Hired as an assistant professor in 1982, he spent 24 years at the university.
Dr. Perry has worked tirelessly as a member of the neurobiology section of the Faculty of 1000 Biology since 2004, has been a longstanding member and chair of the science advisory board for the Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation, Alzheimer's Foundation of America, and STOP Alzheimer's Corporation, and formerly served in numerous other capacities for the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Memory Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease, as well as on a number of review boards. During his tenure, he has been a reviewer and editorial board member for a variety of journals and founded the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, has served as a speaker in his field and has done consulting for various organizations such as Neurotez Laboratories, Synaptogenix Biosciences, Voyager Pharmaceuticals, Avia Neurosciences and Takeda Pharmacies. Locally, he has served on the executive committee and as President of the Alumni Association at Baylor College of Medicine and the board of trustees of the Mind Science Foundation.
Active with professional organizations relative to his work, Dr. Perry chaired and served as a board member for the National Organization of Portuguese Americans, was the conciliator for the International Congress on Neuropathology, is on the program committee for the American Society for Investigative Pathology and is past president of the American Association of Neuropathologists and Southwestern and Rocky Mountain Division of American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also an elected fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, Royal Microscopical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Royal Society of Biology, Linnean Society, Sigma Xi, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Texas Academy of Sciences.
Receiving a Bachelor of Arts in zoology, with high honors, at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Doctor of Philosophy in marine biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Perry then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of cell biology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, between 1979 and 1982. He also served in the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of California at Santa Barbara between 1972 and 1974.
The recipient of an honorary doctorate from Arturo Prat in Iquique, Chile, in 2007, Dr. Perry has received multiple grants for his research: Alzheimer's Association, NIH, Kleberg Foundation and Lowe Foundation. He was named Scientist of the Year by the Portuguese Tribune in 2012 and by BioPub in 2021, received a Senior Investigator Award from the International College of Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology in 2011, a Distinguished Professional Mentor Award from the Society for the Advancements of Chicanos and Native American in Sciences in 2010, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from UDAAN. American Association Investigative Pathology: Rous Whipple Award, American Association of Neuropathologist: Award for Meritorious Contributions to Neuropathology, Global Listening Center: Listening Legend Award, World Brain Mapping Foundation: Golden Axon Leadership Award and Texas Academy of Sciences: Distinguished Texas Scientist. He is an elected member of the Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish Academies of Science.
