Dr. Philip is lauded for his expertise affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital in the department of anesthesiology, perioperative, and pain medicine as a senior consultant anesthesiologist since 2018 and anesthesia liaison in the biomedical engineering department since 2010. He has also found success teaching as a professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School since 2012.
In addition to his long and successful career in medicine, Dr. Philip has become recognized for his work as the founder and president of Med Man Simulations Inc. in 2007 and creator of the computer simulation Gas Man® in 1979. Gas Man® is a unique computer tool for teaching, simulating, and experimenting with inhalation anesthesia. The company is based in Boston and is one of the first of its kind. Dr. Philip envisions continuing teaching inhalation anesthesia kinetics to the medical profession in the future and demonstrating how to utilize the Gas Man® computer simulation program.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Philip has garnered seven U.S. patents and developed over 20 medical products, some of which reduce anesthesia mortality. He has also lectured before various groups and has authored numerous books, approximately 30 book chapters, five book reviews, over 65 peer-reviewed articles, and several editorials. Additionally, Dr. Philip has been active in various editorial roles for scholarly publications and has been involved in numerous professional audio and videotapes, webcasts, and films. Looking toward the future, he aims to progress as a consultant specializing in medical technology.
Dr. Philip transitioned into medicine after working as a Cornell University electrical engineering co-op student Hewlett Packard Medical Products Division. At the time designing medical equipment, he realized that the products they were making were not selling as well as expected because they were manufacturing items that physicians wanted but did not necessarily need. Ultimately, Dr. Philip chose to become a physician specializing in anesthesiology, where he could leverage his engineering expertise.
Civically invested, Dr. Philip has been a senior member of the National Ski Patrol since 1969. He has also been involved with the Medical Reserve Corps of Massachusetts.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Philip received a Bachelor and Master of Science in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1968 and 1969, respectively, and a Doctor of Medicine from State University of New York, Upstate Medical University, in 1973. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship at the New England Deaconess Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), a clinical fellowship in anesthesia from Harvard Medical School, a residency in anesthesia from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women's Hospital), and a research fellowship in anesthesia bioengineering from Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Philip also garnered numerous certifications and licenses in his field and is a board-certified anesthesiologist, Certified Clinical Engineer. Furthermore, he holds credentials as an in-line skating instructor, amateur radio technician, and advanced open-water scuba diver.
As part of his ongoing commitments to his industry, Dr. Philip is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Association of University Anesthetists, and the Society for Technology in Anesthesia.
In light of his success, Dr. Philip has been awarded a multitude of accolades over the past 45 years, including a Teacher of the Year Award from the department of anesthesiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2006 and a Certificate for Outstanding Contribution from the Medical Product Safety Network in 2012. He also received the JS Gravenstein Award from the Society for Technology in Anesthesia for his contributions to the technological aspects of the practice of anesthesiology, encompassing monitoring, therapy, and educational simulation, in 2017 and was inducted into the Clinical Engineering Hall of Fame in 2025.
