Dr. Zampieri's distinguished career reflects a rare blend of clinical expertise, legislative acumen and unwavering commitment to veterans' advocacy. Since 2025, he has served as a veteran stakeholder representative at the VA Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Visual Loss, where his insights continue to inform national strategies on vision health and rehabilitation. Concurrently, he has contributed as an analyst with the United Kingdom Joint Ocular Trauma Task Group at the U.S. Department of Defense since 2021, providing critical analysis on ocular trauma and advancing international collaboration in vision research.
Before assuming his current roles, Dr. Zampieri coordinated Project Gemini with Blind Veterans UK and the Blinded Veterans Association from 2010 to 2021. His leadership extended to the Operation Peer Support program from 2005 to 2013, where he facilitated support networks for veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, helping them navigate the challenges of vision loss and reintegration.
Dr. Zampieri's tenure as the director of government relations for the Blinded Veterans Association from 2005 to 2013 marked a transformative period in veterans' policy. He testified before Congress 35 times, championing expanded health care and benefits for disabled veterans. His efforts were instrumental in securing more than $250 million in funding for these initiatives. Among his most significant achievements was leading the expansion of blind rehabilitation services within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, securing $10 million to establish outpatient centers at nine hospitals and improving access for more than 75,000 blind and low-vision veterans. Dr. Zampieri also played a pivotal role in advancing the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which became the largest expansion of veterans' education benefits since World War II and impacted more than 3 million service members.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Zampieri served as a clinical physician assistant with the Veterans Health Administration at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 1984 to 2001, specializing in surgical care and patient advocacy. His foundational experience includes military service in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1975 during the Vietnam era, where he developed a lifelong dedication to public service.
Dr. Zampieri's academic journey began with an associate degree in science and physician assistant science from Hahnemann Medical College in 1978, followed by a bachelor's degree in liberal arts with a minor in science from the University at Albany in 1993. He then earned a master's degree in political science and government from the University of St. Thomas in 2003 before completing his doctoral studies with a PhD in political science at the University in 2006. These academic achievements provided him with both clinical proficiency and policy expertise, enabling him to bridge medicine and legislative advocacy effectively.
Furthermore, Dr. Zampieri's professional credentials include certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and designation as an Army flight surgeon and aeromedical physician assistant. He is also recognized as an Army clinical specialist, licensed practical nurse and an emergency medical technician.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Zampieri attributes his success to the example set by earlier generations of blinded veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War—whose resilience inspired his own path. He also gives credit to his older brother's career in Vermont politics, which sparked his interest in public service.
Dr. Zampieri has been honored for his expertise in veterans' advocacy and legislative relations. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Political Science Association and the American Society of Ophthalmic Trauma. He also served on the VA National Research Advisory Council for the VA Office of Research and Development from 2022 to 2026.
Civically involved, Dr. Zampieri has been a review committee member for the Vision Research Program under Neurosensory Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs at Fort Detrick since 2014. He is also a former board member for Bravo Victor and a board member for the United States International Council on Disabilities.
Dr. Zampieri's contributions have been recognized by organizations like the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ophthalmic Trauma for his legislative advocacy work. He has also been credited as a contributor to Project Gemini video clips.
In his personal life, Dr. Zampieri enjoys reading, gardening, swimming and kayaking as hobbies. He also values time spent with his two daughters, who have supported him throughout his career. He previously participated alongside younger veterans through Operation Peer Support but now focuses on continued advocacy—traveling regularly to Washington, DC, meeting with congressional committees and championing funding for vision trauma research. His story has been featured through podcast interviews and highlighted by Houston Community College's veteran spotlight series.
Looking ahead, Dr. Zampieri envisions mentoring future advocates who will continue advancing vision research and supporting new treatments for blast-related eye injuries among service members. His commitment extends internationally through advisory roles with Ukrainian organizations on veteran rehabilitation and connections with United States experts on post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injury care. Dr. Zampieri's legacy endures not only through policy achievements but also through preparing others to lead efforts supporting veterans' health and rehabilitation.
