Dr. Tachinardi, a distinguished leader in health informatics and digital health, has built an exemplary career defined by innovation, expertise and a commitment to advancing patient care through technology. Born in São Paulo, he has consistently demonstrated a passion for integrating digital solutions into health care systems, shaping the landscape of medical informatics both nationally and internationally.

In 2024, Dr. Tachinardi assumed the role of chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In this capacity, he has overseen academic and research initiatives that bridge biostatistics with cutting-edge informatics, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and driving advancements in data-driven medicine.

Additionally, since 2023, Dr. Tachinardi has served as senior vice president and chief health digital officer at UC Health in Cincinnati. In this executive position, he has led strategic efforts to implement digital health technologies across the organization, ensuring that innovations are effectively integrated to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

In 2022, Dr. Tachinardi became the associate dean and chief health digital officer at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His dual appointment as professor in the Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences further underscores his dedication to academic excellence and mentorship within the field.

Previously, Dr. Tachinardi served as the interim chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 2022 to 2024. During this period, he guided departmental growth and research development while also serving as co-director of the Biomedical Informatics Core at the University of Cincinnati Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training.

Dr. Tachinardi's tenure as chief digital health officer at UC Health from 2022 to 2023 marked a pivotal phase in which he advanced organizational readiness for digital transformation. Prior to his work in Cincinnati, he held several influential positions at the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis. As the interim chief executive officer and president from 2021 to 2022, he provided visionary leadership during a critical transition period. Dr. Tachinardi previously served as the chief information officer between 2019 and 2022 and director of clinical research informatics from 2019 to 2021.

Concurrently, Dr. Tachinardi was the chief informatics officer for the Indiana Precision Health Initiative and director for clinical research informatics at the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute from 2019 to 2022. He was also a professor in the Department of Biostatistics at Indiana University School of Medicine during this time.

Dr. Tachinardi's earlier career includes serving as executive scientific director at the Clinical and Health Informatics Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2018 to 2019. Between 2016 and 2019, he was a professor (CHS) in the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics at the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Between 2012 and 2016, Dr. Tachinardi held the role of chief knowledge officer at UW Health, where he championed knowledge management strategies that improved clinical decision-making processes. From 2011 to 2019, he was the chief research information officer at UW Health and director of biomedical informatics at the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also served as associate dean for biomedical informatics during this period.

At the University of Chicago from 2006 to 2010, Dr. Tachinardi directed informatics for both the Biological Sciences Division's clinical research initiatives and the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center. He was executive director of academic and research applications for CBIS from 2008 to 2010 and associate director for clinical research with the Initiative for Biomedical Informatics between 2007 and 2010. Additionally, Dr. Tachinardi contributed as a research associate and associate professor in the Department of Medicine.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Tachinardi was chief information officer for Secretaria de Estado da Saude de São Paulo in Brazil from 2003 to 2006. For nearly two decades prior, from 1984 to 2003, he served as chief information officer at InCor HCFMUSP in Brazil, a tenure marked by transformative leadership in hospital information systems. Dr. Tachinardi also represented Brazil within IMIA from 1999 to 2001, reflecting his international influence on medical informatics standards.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tachinardi has been recognized for developing teams, organizations and solutions that foster the use of digital technologies in health care environments. He is credited with designing electronic health record systems, data warehouses and analytics platforms, laying essential foundations that enable these technologies to be refined over time for maximum benefit to patients.

Dr. Tachinardi's professional achievements have been recognized through a distinguished series of honors over more than two decades. Most recently, he was elected a fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics in 2020, reflecting his global impact on the field. Earlier, he served as chair of the AMIA Summit Conference in 2018 and was elected a fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association in 2012.

Prior to these honors, Dr. Tachinardi's contributions to information technology and healthcare innovation were widely recognized in Brazil. In 2006, he received the Best I.T. Case in the Government Sector and was also named among the Top Five Best Information Technology Professionals in the Government Sector. He was further distinguished as Best Information Technology Professional in the Health Care Sector in 2003, among other accolades.

Dr. Tachinardi has held several notable professional memberships and leadership roles, including serving as chair of the AMIA Informatics Summit under the American Medical Informatics Association from 2018 to 2019. Earlier in his career, he was a strategic advisory board member for 3Com between 2003 and 2005 and served on the board of the Brazilian Chapter of DECUS from 1988 to 1992. He has also maintained active involvement with the International Medical Informatics Association.

Dr. Tachinardi's educational background laid a strong foundation for his accomplishments. He earned a master's degree in physiology from Universidade de São Paulo in 1991 after receiving his Doctor of Medicine from Faculdade de Medicina de Itajubá in 1983. Early exposure to technology, sparked by translating an English-language manual for his brother's programmable calculator, ignited his interest in applying computers within medicine. This formative experience led him to program medical formulas on calculators during clinical rotations before building his own computers as a hobbyist.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Tachinardi attributes his success not only to technical proficiency but also to outstanding mentors who guided him throughout his journey. He emphasizes assembling high-performing teams early on — a rarity — and credits openness to opportunity, along with the effective use and sharing of knowledge, as key factors behind his achievements.

Outside his professional pursuits, Dr. Tachinardi enjoys reading.
