In addition to these responsibilities, Ms. Scott Lawson actively collaborates with community stakeholders to promote union initiatives, showcasing her expertise in recruitment and outreach. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Tradeswomen Heroes Award from North America's Building Trades Unions in 2025.
Prior to her current role, Ms. Scott Lawson served as a SMART Sheet Metal Worker with Local Union 19 from 1998 to 2024. During this extensive tenure, she contributed significantly to the trade while building a strong foundation in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Her hands on experience gave her a deep understanding of the industry's demands. Throughout her career, Ms. Scott Lawson made history as the first woman to serve as a full-time union official for Local 19, marking a significant milestone for both her career and the organization's progress toward greater inclusivity.
Ms. Scott Lawson's academic background includes an associate degree in psychology from Community College in Philadelphia, earned in 1998. Beyond her education, she attributes her success to persistence, having consistently applied for and interviewed for union positions since 2014. Her determination, resilience, and commitment to representation have driven her to create opportunities for those who have historically been underrepresented in the trades.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Ms. Scott Lawson is actively involved in various civic organizations. She serves on the boards of multiple SMART committees as well as the women's committee focused on advancing equity in the trades. As a member of the steering committee for Women in Non-Traditional Careers she advocates for increased diversity within skilled trades. Ms. Scott Lawson is also involved with the National Apprenticeship Committee of the AFL-CIO and community initiatives such as an annual Turkey Drive.
Born in Philadelphia, Ms. Scott Lawson enjoys reading and spending time with her family and their two dogs. Looking ahead, she remains committed to increasing the representation of women in union trades by actively recruiting, mentoring and supporting women pursuing careers in these fields. As the only woman on staff- and often the only woman in the room- she is dedicated to opening doors for others and fostering greater gender diversity within union leadership.
