Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Gordon has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to humanitarian service and health care throughout her distinguished career. As the founder of the Muriel Gordon Foundation, established in 2003, she has dedicated more than two decades to international missionary work, with a particular focus on maternal and child health. Under her leadership, the foundation has reached communities across the globe, including recent efforts in Cuba and ongoing projects throughout Africa. Ms. Gordon is known for her hands-on approach, often traveling for extended periods to deliver direct care and support to those in need.
Known for her expertise in international missionary work and maternal and child health, Ms. Gordon has been at the forefront of addressing critical shortages of medical supplies and equipment in underserved regions for nearly 30 years. She became acutely aware of the wastefulness prevalent in American society and resolved to redirect surplus resources, such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers and essential medical supplies, to areas where they are desperately needed. Ms. Gordon's dedication extends beyond logistics; she personally visits recipient countries to connect with local doctors, hospitals, churches and schools. Her interactions with influential leaders including Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, former president of Liberia, and reigning Emeritus Archbishop of Kumasi, Ghana, Peter Kwasi Sarpon, have furthered her mission's impact. She is particularly passionate about supporting the less privileged by providing baby formula and combating diseases such as malaria, typhoid and dysentery. Ms. Gordon's work is marked by compassion for those suffering from untreated injuries and illnesses due to limited resources.
Prior to founding her organization, Ms. Gordon built a robust career in health care spanning 45 years. She served as a nurse practitioner and held two full-time positions within the industry, consistently demonstrating her passion for patient care. Her professional journey began after immigrating from Kingston, Jamaica, where she initially worked as a governess for children before pursuing nursing education.
Ms. Gordon's early experiences included serving as a nurse at Wyckoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn, then advancing to a public health nurse position in Suffolk County. Committed to lifelong learning, Ms. Gordon pursued continuing education opportunities that enhanced her ability to deliver family-centered care.
Education has played a pivotal role in shaping Ms. Gordon's career. She earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Nassau Community College, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a master's degree in maternal and child health from Stony Brook University, graduating in 1990. She also holds a pediatric nurse practitioner license, which has enabled her to provide specialized care to children and families worldwide.
Ms. Gordon is an active member of the New York State Nurses Association, reflecting her dedication to professional excellence and advocacy within the nursing community. Additionally, she volunteers with various nonprofit and charitable organizations, further exemplifying her commitment to civic engagement.
Throughout her life, Ms. Gordon has drawn inspiration from supportive individuals who share her passion for service. She believes that collaboration among caring people can yield powerful results even when resources are limited.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Ms. Gordon enjoys traveling, a pursuit that complements her global outreach efforts. Looking ahead, she intends to continue expanding her initiatives through the Muriel Gordon Foundation with steadfast resolve. She is considering launching a GoFundMe campaign to invite public support for her mission and is exploring the possibility of organizing group tours of professionals, such as doctors and nurses, to provide aid in regions like the Caribbean and Africa.
