WASHINGTON, DC, April 16, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sharon L. Telleen, PhD, research associate professor emerita of the University of Illinois at Chicago, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the October/November 2021 Washington, DC, regional issue of Forbes magazine.
Dr. Telleen has been recognized as a research associate professor emerita in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 2011. Previously serving the university as research associate professor in the Institute for Health Research and Policy, faculty affiliate in the Psychology Department's Division of Community and Prevention Research, interim associate director for research in the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, and among the original faculty in the maternal and child health public health training program, she developed the initial Illinois Medicaid Family Case Management System as part of the Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative. She also participated in the development of the state public health surveillance Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Reporting System.
Dr. Telleen emphasizes that public health is interdisciplinary and pulls information from behavioral scientists. Upon the passing of the Affordable Care Act under former President Barack Obama, she was thrilled as the legislation was based upon governmental research in which she had participated. She has dedicated her career as a research psychologist to the study of social and community factors affecting child health outcomes. Working for eight years on the determinants of infant death in Illinois, she found herself involved in epidemiology around the Chicago housing projects in the 1980s, when women and children were living in dilapidated conditions with limited access to health care. With funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Dr. Telleen also conducted childhood violence prevention research in the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative (1999-2004).
Additionally, Dr. Telleen worked intimately with the National Institutes of Health's New England Region Network of Libraries of Medicine, where she was instrumental in advancing their focus on evidence-based information access for public health professionals. Internationally, Dr. Telleen participated in the World Health Organization European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood, Ukraine (1997-2001). She has been a reviewer for the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved and for the Maternal and Child Health Journal and has authored/co-authored more than 70 publications, including "The Transition from Welfare to Work: Processes, Challenges and Outcomes" in 2002.
