PALM SPRINGS, CA, April 16, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mike Richey has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Richey has established a distinguished career marked by leadership in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, with a particular focus on advancing HIV research and advocacy. Since joining the National AIDS Memorial in 2018, he has played a pivotal role in guiding the organization's mission. Elected co-chair in 2019, Mr. Richey served alongside Tom Raffin until Dr. Raffin's departure, after which he assumed the position of chair. He was recently re-elected to this role, where he manages the board of directors, recruits dedicated board members and ensures that the chief executive officer is equipped with clear objectives and necessary resources to fulfill organizational goals.
Before his current tenure, Mr. Richey served as principal at Halteres Associates, LLC since 2003, providing strategic guidance within the life sciences sector. From 2011 to 2014, he was a board director at Zyomyx. He concurrently served as executive vice president and chief business officer at diaDexus, where he contributed to business development and operational leadership.
Between 2005 and 2011, Mr. Richey served as chief business officer and later president at Tethys Bioscience, overseeing the company's growth and innovation in diagnostic technologies. His earlier experience includes serving as vice president at Chiron Corporation from 1990 to 1998. During his tenure at Chiron, Mr. Richey collaborated with Mickey Urdea to develop the first HIV viral load test. This groundbreaking achievement demonstrated the correlation between lower viral loads and longer, healthier lives. This work was instrumental in expediting the approval of protease inhibitors and other therapies, transforming HIV from a fatal diagnosis into a manageable chronic condition. The test also laid the foundation for early diagnostic technologies and prevention medications that have since become standard in HIV care.
Before joining Chiron Corporation, Mr. Richey worked at Abbott Laboratories from 1978 to 1990, where he rose to district manager for the San Francisco region, overseeing a team of 10 sales professionals across Northern California and achieving an annual goal of $10 million. His leadership earned him multiple accolades, including the President's Club and Salesman of the Year awards for outstanding performance.
Mr. Richey began his professional journey as a microbiologist in the clinical laboratory at a children's hospital in Oklahoma City from 1974 to 1978. This foundational experience set the stage for his lifelong commitment to improving public health through science and innovation.
His academic background includes earning a bachelor's degree in microbiology with a minor in biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma in Norman in 1975. The rigorous scientific training he received provided essential knowledge for his early laboratory work and later informed his contributions to diagnostic advancements in HIV research. Mr. Richey credits his success to a deep passion for making a positive impact on others' lives. This value has guided his transition from executive leadership roles to board service.
Mr. Richey's civic engagement extends beyond his professional achievements. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the National AIDS Memorial since 2018 and was previously a board member of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation from 2007 to 2012. These roles reflect his enduring commitment to supporting individuals affected by HIV and advancing public awareness around prevention and treatment.
Born in Tulsa, Mr. Richey finds fulfillment in supporting fundraising efforts for causes close to his heart. He is privileged to be an uncle and great-uncle to two nieces, a great-nephew and a great-niece—relationships that inspire him to continue making meaningful contributions for future generations. Looking ahead, Mr. Richey aims to ensure that individuals lost in Palm Springs are recognized and that their stories contribute to a broader understanding of possibilities in HIV prevention.
Throughout his career, Mr. Richey has demonstrated unwavering dedication to scientific progress, compassionate leadership and community service. These qualities have earned him recognition among peers and inclusion in Marquis Who's Who.
