NEW YORK, NY, April 16, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Walter (Volodymyr) Zaryckyj has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Zaryckyj has established a distinguished career defined by his expertise in political theory, with a particular focus on the history of political thought and equally, by his efforts in the field of international relations, especially in matters related to the evolving geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe. Since 2005, he has served as the executive director of the Center for U.S.-Ukrainian Relations, where he has been instrumental in shaping dialogue between Ukraine and the United States.
Under Dr. Zaryckyj's leadership, the center has grown from its inaugural conference in 2000, which featured prominent figures such as Zbigniew Brzezinski and Paul Wolfowitz, into a robust institution that hosts six conferences annually. These gatherings have addressed critical issues, including Ukraine's aspirations for European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization membership, economic reforms, security cooperation, energy policy and historical encounters among Ukrainians and their neighbors.
The center's first conference marked a pivotal moment in Ukraine's post-Soviet trajectory, signaling its intent to align with the Euro-Atlantic community. Dr. Zaryckyj's stewardship has resulted in nearly 150 conferences and an extensive archive of 800 to 900 presentations by notable leaders such as General Wesley Clark, General Philip Breedlove, General Mark Kimmett and Admiral Mark Montgomery. His commitment to fostering informed dialogue has made the center a significant resource for policymakers and scholars alike.
In addition to his work at the center, Dr. Zaryckyj is president of the Ukrainian American Freedom Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting Ukraine's defense capabilities through non-lethal aid such as surveillance drones and protective gear. The foundation played a crucial role during the early stages of the Russian invasion by equipping young Ukrainians with technology that provided vital intelligence to soldiers defending Kyiv.
Dr. Zaryckyj's academic tenure at New York University spanned three decades, from 1981 to 2011. As a professor of political science in the university's general studies and, later, global studies programs, he was recognized for his exceptional teaching, earning the Great Teachers Award in 1988. He excelled at engaging university students, a skill honed during his earlier experiences as a camp counselor and youth leader, and contributed significantly to the evolution of New York University's international programs.
Prior to his tenure at New York University, Dr. Zaryckyj served as associate director and researcher at the Ukrainian Central Information Service in New York City. In this capacity, he was deeply involved in disseminating information about Ukraine's political developments during a period marked by Soviet aggression and internal decline. He also held a faculty position at Rutgers University from 1979 to 1981.
Dr. Zaryckyj is widely acknowledged as an authority on Black Sea regional dynamics - ancient, medieval and modern. He is an active member of the Black Sea Forum and regularly participates in area studies alumni lectures for the Columbia University Alumni Association. His leadership extends to organizing and speaking at numerous conferences each year.
Higher education played a crucial role in Dr. Zaryckyj's professional success. He earned all of his degrees from Columbia University, including a Doctor of Philosophy in political theory in 2010, a Master of Philosophy in 1978, a Master of Arts in 1975 and a bachelor's degree in 1972.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Zaryckyj attributes much of his success to the influence of his family — particularly his grandfather, who was a judge in pre-World War II Poland, and his great-grandfather, rector of St. George's Academy in Lviv (Lemberg)— both fierce advocates for Ukrainian independence. The legacy of advocacy continued through his father's political activism both during World War II and after immigrating to the United States.
Dr. Zaryckyj places a strong emphasis on community and personal integrity. He values close ties within both Jewish and Ukrainian circles, recognizing their shared histories of statelessness and resilience, and believes that cultivating diverse support networks has been essential throughout his life. He maintains that any setbacks he encounters are never due to a lack of effort, taking pride in giving his full commitment without cutting corners. Guided by a commitment to excellence, he consistently strives for outstanding performance, even when results fall short of that ideal.
