Dr. Kim was born in 1982 in the former Soviet Union and is originally from Kazakhstan, where he represents a small minority population of Koreans known as the Koryo-saram, a community that has lived in the region for over 120 years. As the first physician and the first individual in his family to attain higher education, his achievements carry deep personal and cultural significance. He immigrated to the United States in 2009 with a strong sense of purpose and determination.

Currently, Dr. Kim serves as Chief of General Surgery at Episcopal Health Services Inc., a role he has held since 2022. In this capacity, he oversees surgical operations, manages physician recruitment and scheduling, promotes surgical services, and leads community outreach initiatives focused on cancer screening and prevention. He is also responsible for patient education efforts, quality improvement measures, and departmental leadership, including faculty and student engagement.

Since 2024, Dr. Kim has served as Program Director for the General Surgery Residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education at Episcopal Health Services Inc., where he is dedicated to training future surgeons through rigorous academic and clinical instruction. In 2025, he was appointed Adjunct Clinical Professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, further expanding his role as an educator and mentor.

Dr. Kim joined Episcopal Health Services Inc. in 2021 as a general surgeon, quickly distinguishing himself through his expertise and compassionate care in general surgery, acute care, and breast cancer programs. Prior to this, he practiced at Kaiser Permanente in California from 2020 to 2021.

A defining moment in Dr. Kim's career occurred during his chief residency year, when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer just four months before graduation. Despite significant health challenges—further complicated by treatment disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic—he persevered with the support of his faith and family. He successfully completed his residency while continuing to care for patients, demonstrating exceptional resilience and dedication. This experience profoundly shaped his approach to medicine, reinforcing his belief that beyond technical excellence, a great surgeon must possess compassion, humility, and the ability to connect with patients during their most vulnerable moments.

Dr. Kim is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and maintains active membership in the Association for Surgical Education, Association of Program Directors in Surgery, American Medical Association and the American Osteopathic Association.

His academic journey began in Kazakhstan before he pursued medical education in the United States. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015, followed by a General Surgery residency at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, completed in 2020.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kim has attributed his success to unwavering faith and strong family support, which have sustained him through challenges and enabled him to continue advancing patient care and medical education.

Beyond his clinical work, he is actively involved with the ICARE Foundation, reflecting his commitment to community health and service.

Looking ahead, Dr. Kim aims to strengthen his surgical department through strategic recruitment and expanded community outreach initiatives.
