Dr. Hundahl's distinguished career in medicine is marked by a series of influential roles and pioneering achievements that have shaped cancer care and surgical practice both nationally and internationally. Since 1986, he has served as a co-founder and lifetime director of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii). Under Dr. Hundahl's guidance, the organization grew to become the largest nonprofit home health care agency in Hawaii, employing more than 230 staff members and significantly enhancing the quality and convenience of patient care throughout the state.
Retiring in 2019, Dr. Hundahl held concurrent appointments as both a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, Davis, and the chief of surgery for the VA Northern California Health Care System within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 2002 to 2019. In these capacities, he excelled as both a teacher and mentor while developing multiple successful clinical collaborations between the VA and the U.S. Department of Defense, furthering access to advanced surgical care for veterans and military personnel.
Dr. Hundahl gained early recognition in academia as an assistant professor of surgery for five years, starting in 1988. Between 1996 and 2002, he excelled as an associate clinical professor of surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Simultaneously, he contributed as an assistant research professor and research staff member at the Cancer Research Center Hawaii from 1993 to 2002 and as the medical director of Queen's Cancer Institute from 2000 to 2002. During this time, Dr. Hundahl also maintained a private practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu for over two decades, between 1988 and 2002.
Among other appointments, Dr. Hundahl served as the chief of surgery at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu from 1994 to 2000, after previously holding the role of associate chief of surgery between 1993 and 1995. As the chair of the Commission on Cancer, a consortium representing approximately 55 cancer organizations across the U.S., from 1998 to 2000, he unified diverse stakeholders around common goals for cancer treatment standards and data collection.
Dr. Hundahl's academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1977, followed by a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from the school of medicine at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1981. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1986 before pursuing a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, completing the program in 1988. Dr. Hundahl received certification from the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1982 and board certification from the American Board of Surgery Inc. in 1987.
Professional memberships have played a vital role in Dr. Hundahl's career development and influence. He has served as a trustee and chair elect, as well as program chair for general surgery and a congress planning committee member for the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association. He has also served as a board member and executive committee member for the American College of Surgeons, state cancer liaison chair and committee on applicants member of the American College of Surgeons' Hawaii chapter, and past president of the Sacramento Surgical Society. Additionally, Dr. Hundahl was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society, and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, and maintains membership with the International Gastric Cancer Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Civically, Dr. Hundahl is active with The Pacific Club, the St. Botolph Club and the Nantucket Yacht Club. He is also a life board member for Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii) since its founding in 1986, has served as the vice chair for the hi-tex division board of directors with the American Cancer Society Inc., has been active as the president for the Honolulu unit with the American Cancer Society Inc. and, among other involvement, has been a participant on the ad hoc national task force on Privacy of Medical Records.
Dr. Hundahl's scholarly output includes serving as the medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008, and he has acted as a reviewer for multiple professional journals. Notably, he has authored over 60 journal articles and over 20 book chapters as an expert in his field.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hundahl has been recognized for groundbreaking research in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer, establishing the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric, and advancing adjuvant chemo-radiation protocols that improved survival rates for gastric cancer patients. His work with large-scale national and international cancer databases has contributed significantly to research and quality improvement efforts worldwide.
Dr. Hundahl's contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including Best Doctors in America every year between 1995 and 2020. He also received recognition among the Top Surgeons by Consumers' Research Council of America, received a Best Presentation Award by the World Health Organization, a Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons and, among other accolades, was the recipient of the Joan Oettinger Memorial Award from the school of medicine at the University of California, Davis.
