Drawing on over three decades of expertise in the field of academia, Dr. Kern specialized in chemical physics and quantum chemistry. Since his retirement in 1998, he has been honored as a distinguished teaching professor emeritus at Northwestern University, where he found much success as a professor of chemistry, the vice president of research and graduate studies, and the dean of the graduate school from 1992 until 1998. Dr. Kern initially began his career working as a staff member at the IBM Watson Laboratory in Columbia University from 1962 to 1964, followed by a post of an assistant professor of chemistry at the State University of New York in Stony Brook between 1964 and 1966.

Dr. Kern continued his vocation at The Ohio State University, where he served in a variety of roles, including an adjunct associate professor of chemistry, the department of chemistry academy vice chairman, a professor of chemistry, and the dean of the college of mathematics and physical sciences from 1966 until 1992. During this time, he was also involved with the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC, as a deputy director and acting director of the division of chemistry, a program director of structural chemistry and thermodynamics, acting section head of physical chemistry and chemical dynamics, a senior staff associate and computer science research network project director in the division of mathematics and computer science, and a program director of theoretical chemical physics in the division of chemistry. In his career-related endeavors, Dr. Kern has authored numerous scholarly articles in professional journals and served as an associate editor of Chemical Physics Letters for 14 years.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Kern pursued an education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Carnegie Mellon University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1957. He continued his academic efforts at the University of Minnesota, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. As a commitment to his field, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship in chemical physics at Columbia University in New York in 1962. Additionally, Dr. Kern was active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Chemical Society.

Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, Dr. Kern has received multiple awards, including the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and the Marquis Who's Who Humanitarian Award. Additionally, he has been featured in the Millennium Magazine, as well as the Marquis Who's Who in the World publication, and recognized as a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional and a Marquis Who's Who Industry Leader. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud to have worked in a laboratory alongside two Nobel laureates and to have studied the cryo-mechanical origin of the internal rotation barrier of the molecule Ethane, which has been an unsolved issue for 25 years. Reflecting on a long career, he attributes much of his success to his drive to continually advance, and to his peers and mentors, including Dr. Robert Parr. Looking toward the future, Dr. Kern aspires to develop a successful new hedge fund.
