GIG HARBOR, WA, May 05, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carol Kutsch, M. Mus, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Kutsch has established herself as a distinguished performing violinist, violist and teacher, drawing on six decades of expertise in her field. Currently based in Gig Harbor, she continues to offer private lessons to a wide range of students, including beginners, college students and older adults. Her teaching philosophy centers on adapting to the unique learning styles of each individual, rather than teaching to a system. Ms. Kutsch believes that a strong foundation in reading music notation, together with intent listening, is essential for longevity in music, a conviction shaped by her observations where learning mainly by ear was employed.
In addition to her teaching, Ms. Kutsch maintains an active performance schedule in Tacoma and Gig Harbor, participating in choral and church events and performing with the community orchestra. Although her recent relocation and spouse's injury have temporarily limited her public appearances, she looks forward to resuming regular performances, which formerly sometimes numbered nearly 90 engagements annually. Her earlier career was marked by extensive involvement in musical theater, symphonic and opera productions. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley scheduled 8-10 performances each week.
Ms. Kutsch's performance history is notable for its breadth and depth. Beginning as founding member and first concertmistress of Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, her orchestral performance includes: Master Sinfonia; Redlands; Riverside; San Bernardino; LA Early Music Academy; Claremont Opera; California; Santa Cruz; San Jose; Opera San Jose; Peninsula (CM); SF Opera Center (Asst CM); Fremont; Stanford Memorial Chapel; SF Choral Society; Stanford University and Masterworks Chorale orchestra. She was a member of the Monterey Jazz Festival Ch. Orchestra for many years and has performed as Assist Concertmaster with San Francisco Opera Center Orchestra during nearly a decade of East Coast tours. The tours of 4–6 weeks brought live opera to communities far from regular opera companies, typically beginning in the Northeast and concluding in Florida. Adapting to five venues per week was "interesting." For many years she was privileged to act as concertmaster of the Herbert Blomstedt International Conducting and Symphonic Workshop.
A devoted chamber musician, Ms. Kutsch was violinist in the Faculty Piano Trios at UC Riverside, CSU San Bernardino and Loma Linda Universities. She has performed with the noted Louis Kievman, Eleanor Schonfeld, Claire Hodgkins, Nancy Bricard, Andor Toth, Gabor Rejto, Adoph Baller and more.
Beyond performance and teaching, Ms. Kutsch has served as a judge for numerous competitions and adjudications organized by the American String Teachers Association and MTNA, contributing her expertise to the development of emerging musicians. She is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, reflecting her dedication to excellence in music. She has been a longtime member of the Musician's Union.
Among Ms. Kutsch's most significant achievements is her recognition as a talented concertmaster, a role that has brought both pride and introspection regarding her place in the world of music (occasionally asking "why me?"). After her difficult start, she created and taught a practical string techniques course at several universities. On a dare, she began to compile humorous anecdotes about the peculiarities of the music world.
Ms. Kutsch's academic background has played a pivotal role in shaping her career. She earned a master's degree in violin and viola performance from the University of Southern California in 1974 after completing a bachelor's degree in music at Pacific Union College in 1972. Her educational journey was shaped by exceptional mentors, including Jenny Rudin, who instilled not only technical proficiency and diagnostics but also a deep understanding of musical concepts. William Whitson (founder of Palo Alto Ch. Orch) brought camaraderie, responsibility and joy in making music to his high school musicians, who for the first decade were the only non-university based orchestra in town.
Ms. Kutsch's path into music was inspired by family tradition; her grandfather was an accomplished musician trained in the old German method, though he did not pursue it professionally. Despite starting violin lessons later than most, at age 7, quitting violin partly due to untrained instruction (it was going poorly!), Ms. Kutsch resumed study under the guidance of superb teacher Jenny Rudin. At Pacific Union College, she benefited from instruction by Dr. George Wargo, a former principal violist of the National Symphony Orchestra (youngest member ever). His chamber music skills were terrific as was his inclusion of a few students in the college chamber music series.
Throughout her career, Ms. Kutsch has held several academic appointments that reflect her commitment to music education. Since 2014, she has served on the music faculty at Notre Dame de Namur University, where she continues to mentor aspiring musicians. From 1975 to 1987, she was a music lecturer at UC Riverside, Loma Linda University and the University of Redlands, sharing her knowledge with students across multiple institutions. She has coached and taught at SF Conservatory of Music, Junior Division and was Mehuhin Faculty at the Nueva School for 25 years.
Ms. Kutsch's contributions have been recognized through various honors, including being named competition winner and soloist with the Napa Symphony in 1973, received the Outstanding Music Graduate Award as an honors graduate from Pacific Union College. While at USC, her piano trio were finalists in the Coleman Chamber Music Auditions at CalTech.
Born in Connersville, IN, Ms. Kutsch enjoys playing the violin and viola outside of professional settings, as well as engaging in creative hobbies such as stained-glass work, beading and jewelry making. She is also passionate about reading and gardening. Additionally, Ms. Kutsch is civically engaged through donations and support for local church organizations. She values giving back to her community and fostering connections through music.
Looking ahead, Ms. Kutsch intends to continue performing and teaching violin and viola within the Gig Harbor and Tacoma communities, mentoring students of all ages, and participating in church and community orchestra engagements. She looks forward to remaining active in adjudicating and supporting emerging musicians and pursuing lifelong learning and artistic expression.
