HOOVER, AL, May 07, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Erik Orozco-Hernandez, MD, FACS, FAST, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Orozco-Hernandez has distinguished himself as a cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he has served since 2017. Over nine years in this role, he has cultivated deep expertise in cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery; ventricular assistance; mechanical circulatory support; and thoracic organ transplantation (heart, lung, and heart–lung), including multi-organ transplantation (heart–kidney, heart–liver) and the care of critically ill patients. His dedication to these demanding disciplines has earned him the respect of colleagues and the gratitude of countless patients.

For Dr. Orozco-Hernandez, the most transcendent dimension of his profession is the ability to offer patients the rarest and most precious gift in existence: time. He often reflects that transplantation is not a cure—every organ will one day be rejected or fail—but the time granted, and the care offered along the way, remain among the most meaningful acts a physician can provide.

While many physicians believe they "save lives," Dr. Orozco-Hernandez holds an unshakable conviction that such power belongs to a force far greater than any human being.

"God saves lives; I merely perform the operation."

Throughout his career, Dr. Orozco-Hernandez has demonstrated unwavering commitment to advancing medical knowledge and elevating patient care. He is an active member of several distinguished professional societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Mexican Society of Cardiac Surgery, and the National Council of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation—recognitions that reflect his leadership, expertise, and contributions to the field.

Dr. Orozco-Hernandez has authored several publications of significant relevance and impact, including original surgical techniques and comprehensive reviews that have contributed to the development of international treatment guidelines. His academic work reflects not only technical mastery but also a commitment to advancing the global understanding of cardiothoracic disease and transplantation.

His academic foundation was established at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine. This rigorous training provided the clinical and scientific grounding for his later achievements in cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation. He further strengthened his credentials through certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and through advanced fellowships in vascular and endovascular surgery at the Arizona Heart Hospital; thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital; and mechanical circulatory support and transplantation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital—preparing him to practice in the United States and contribute to global progress in cardiovascular care.

Resilience has been a guiding principle in Dr. Orozco-Hernandez's life. He considers it essential not only to his own journey but also as a legacy he hopes to instill in his children. He believes that mistakes, when embraced with humility, become teachers—offering lessons that shape future generations. His family remains his deepest source of motivation, inspiring him to pursue excellence both in the operating room and in his personal life.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Orozco-Hernandez enjoys running, cycling, reading, and swimming. He is committed to sharing knowledge and technology with his home country, working to strengthen Mexico's health care system. His ongoing efforts focus on advancing transplantation and circulatory support techniques—fields that first inspired him to master these technologies with the hope of improving care in Mexico. Among his long-term aspirations is the development of a fully biocompatible artificial heart capable of rivaling traditional heart or lung transplantation.

Family occupies a central place in his life. He is the father of five children: his eldest daughter is a physician with a PhD in psychology; another child has completed college and works in digital marketing; his son is preparing to begin university; two younger children live with him in the United States, while three remain in Mexico.

Dr. Orozco-Hernandez seeks to build a legacy defined by meaningful contributions to medicine and by the enduring well-being of those he loves.
