As a principal software engineer at Amentum Services Inc., supporting the Naval Surface Warfare Center since 2025, he collaborates with the United States Department of the Navy in support of the Missile Defense Agency. In this capacity, he designs and develops bespoke software tools for analysts, enabling them to process sensitive data and generate targeted outputs, such as datasets and charts. His work ensures that evolving operational requirements are met with advanced capabilities and system enhancements, directly impacting national defense initiatives.

From 2024 to 2025, Dr. Wardell served as strategic planner for the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence G3 at Amentum Services Inc., where he contributed to strategic planning efforts that supported critical defense operations. Prior to this, he held several roles with Jacobs on the Joint Interoperability Test Command Test Evaluation Contract from 2021 to 2024, including deputy program manager and technical advisor, technical advisor and quality management program task lead. In these positions, he provided technical leadership and oversight for quality management programs, ensuring rigorous standards in test and evaluation processes for defense systems.

Dr. Wardell's professional journey began in broadcasting as a radio announcer for KTFI at Greentree Broadcasting from 1984 to 1985 before embarking on a distinguished 36-year career in the U.S. Air Force beginning in 1985. His early assignments included serving as a cryptologic linguist (Russian) with Detachment 4, 691 Electronic Security Wing from 1987 to 1991, followed by a role as an intelligence training instructor at the 17th Training Wing from 1991 to 1993. He transitioned into engineering roles after the collapse of the Soviet Union, reflecting his adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges.

As a research engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory from 1996 to 1998, Dr. Wardell contributed to projects that would shape future defense technologies. He then served as chief of the technical engineering section at the 341st Missile Wing from 1998 to 2001, where he found particular meaning in supporting national deterrence through intercontinental ballistic missile operations in Montana. His expertise expanded further as a senior intelligence engineer at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center from 2001 to 2004, where he engaged in highly specialized classified work.

Dr. Wardell continued his ascent through leadership roles, including branch chief and division chief at the Air Force Technical Applications Center, joint staff officer on the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, Intelligence Transition Team and course director at the Air Command and Staff College from 2010 to 2012. As the director of staff at the Air Command and Staff College from 2012 to 2013 and later department head for the e-School for Graduate Professional Military Education from 2016 to 2019, he made significant contributions to academic administration and curriculum development.

A defining moment in Dr. Wardell's career was his decision near the conclusion of his tenure as instructor and department head at the Air Command and Staff College to restructure his position for civilian leadership. Recognizing that such a transition would enhance continuity and broaden experience within the organization, he participated in selecting a highly qualified retired Air Force officer with a doctorate as his successor—an act that strengthened both personnel development and institutional resilience.

In his final military assignment as a cyber threat intelligence officer at Joint Interoperability Test Command from 2019 to 2021, Dr. Wardell applied advanced cyber expertise developed during his doctoral studies. Throughout his military service, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing operational needs in challenging environments—including deployments during the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia and a year-long assignment in Baghdad during the Iraq War—where his rare expertise was urgently required.

Dr. Wardell's academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping his expertise in artificial intelligence and cyber-physical systems security. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from the United States Air Force Institute of Technology in 2020 with a dissertation focused on deep learning techniques for enhancing cyber-physical system resilience against cyber threats. He also holds a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the United States Air Force Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in international relations from Troy University, a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Wright State University, an Associate of Applied Science in instructor of technology and military science and an Associate of Applied Science in intelligence collection, both from the Community College of the Air Force.

Furthermore, Dr. Wardell has furthered his expertise with a certificate in Russian from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and an Associate of Applied Science in computer-aided drafting from College of Southern Idaho. His professional credentials include a financial planning certificate, IBM AI developer certification, project management professional certification and program management level II certification, among many others.

Dr. Wardell's scholarly contributions include authoring "Deep Learning-Based, Passive Fault Tolerant Control Facilitated by a Taxonomy of Cyber-Attack Effects," his doctoral dissertation published by the United States Air Force Institute of Technology in 2020 and co-authoring "A Method for Revealing and Addressing Security Vulnerabilities in Cyber-physical Systems by Modeling Malicious Agent Interactions with Formal Verification," published by Procedia Computer Science in 2016. He has further contributed articles to professional journals in his area of expertise, seeking to preserve his knowledge for the next generation.

One of Dr. Wardell's earliest mentors, Dr. Rob Williams, worked with him at the Air Force Research Laboratory in the 1990s and brought significantly greater experience to a similar career path. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Williams transitioned to a civilian government role and later served as a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. He has remained an enduring source of inspiration and support for Dr. Wardell, and they continue to stay in contact.

Dr. Wardell's commitment to professional excellence is reflected by memberships with the International Test and Evaluation Association, AFCEA International, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Tau Beta Pi Association since 1996. His exemplary service has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Bronze Star Medal awarded by the United States Air Force in 2009, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Meritorious Service Medals and five Air Force Commendation Medals.

In his personal life, Dr. Wardell enjoys programming, woodworking, restoring Volkswagen Beetles and spending time with his two Chihuahua mixes.
