His integrative approach, which combines traditional psychiatric methods with alternative therapies, has earned him recognition as an expert in the field.
Adding to his expertise, Dr. Eyerman has been a longtime director of the Transpersonal Institute of San Francisco since 1989, where he has guided the institute's mission to explore consciousness and promote transpersonal psychology. His leadership was notably highlighted on the Thomson Reuters Billboard in Times Square in November 2025 as well.
From 1999 to 2001, Dr. Eyerman served as a psychiatric consultant to the Department of Child Neurology at St. Louis University, providing specialized insights into neuropsychiatric conditions affecting children. He has also contributed his expertise as an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at both the University of California, San Francisco, and Touro University in New York City since 2005.
Dr. Eyerman's pioneering work facilitating holotropic breathwork since 1988 has been influential throughout his career. Among his most notable and groundbreaking studies, which took place at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, involved 11,000 psychiatric inpatients treated with holotropic breathwork without adverse reactions or complaints. This achievement was detailed in Dr. Eyerman's widely cited publication 'Clinical Report of Holotropic Breath Work in 11,000 Psychiatric Inpatients,' published in the MAPS Bulletin in 2013. He also introduced Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy from 1989 to 1990, well before its mainstream adoption, and continues to utilize non-drug psychedelic therapies, such as Ericksonian hypnosis and holotropic breathwork. Additionally, Dr. Eyerman incorporates Ayurvedic practices, including pulse diagnosis, dietary recommendations and mantra use into his clinical work.

He has been board-certified in psychiatry and neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 1980, holds certification from the Association of Holotropic Breathwork International since 1988, and has been licensed by the Medical Board of California since 1978.
Beyond his formal education, Dr. Eyerman's spiritual journey included studying with renowned teachers such as the Dalai Lama, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sri Ma. He trained extensively as a transcendental meditation teacher, taking a year away from medical school for meditation training, which he found to profoundly influence his approach to healing.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Eyerman's professional affiliations reflect his dedication to advancing psychiatry. He is a longstanding member of the American Psychiatric Society and a founding member of the Association of Holotropic Breathwork International. He has been the president of the North Bay chapter of the Northern California Psychiatric Society since 2003 and a member of the spirituality and psychiatry section of the American Psychiatric Society since 2024. Meanwhile, Dr. Eyerman's civic engagement includes involvement with organizations such as Transcendental Meditation Ferusha Group, Syda Yoga groups and Students for Democratic Society.
Dr. Eyerman's scholarly contributions are extensive and date back to 1980, when he authored his first scholarly article in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry about a mentally disabled adult female who practiced the transcendental meditation program. Since that time, she has contributed to several other professional publications, such as the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction and the Journal of Transpersonal Research.
In recognition of his contributions to psychiatry, Dr. Eyerman was named Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Society in 2015. Throughout his education and career, he was influenced by prominent figures and mentors who shaped his understanding of psychedelic psychotherapy. Looking ahead, he intends to further develop his integrative psychiatric practice by expanding psychedelic therapies beyond current modalities such as ketamine and holotropic breathwork while incorporating creative arts therapy, trance techniques and dance into treatment protocols. Dr. Eyerman anticipates presenting at the European Transpersonal Association Symposium in Oaxaca, where he will discuss cases of unexpected enlightenment experiences and lead a trance-dance workshop using Khoisan methods.
