Dr. Altchuler has established a distinguished career in psychiatry, aerospace medicine, addiction psychiatry and sleep medicine, earning recognition as an expert in these fields. Since 2022, he has held the title of emeritus assistant professor of psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minnesota. Concurrently, he is recognized as an emeritus consultant at the Mayo Clinic. In these roles, Dr. Altchuler continues to contribute to the advancement of psychiatric care and education, mentoring young professionals and guiding research initiatives.

Since 2021, Dr. Altchuler has also served as a consultant to the Federal Air Surgeon at the Federal Aviation Administration, where his expertise in aerospace medicine and psychiatry has been instrumental in supporting airmen with psychiatric illnesses and sleep disorders. His commitment to this specialized population reflects his broader dedication to improving mental health outcomes for individuals facing unique occupational challenges.

Affiliated with the Mayo Clinic since 1990, Dr. Altchuler served as a consultant in psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, contributing to the Division of Preventive, Occupational, and Aerospace Medicine as well as the Center for Sleep Medicine. During this period, until 2022, he provided care to patients both locally and internationally, furthering clinical excellence in psychiatric and sleep medicine.

During his tenure at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Altchuler also served as the section head for addiction and general psychiatry from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Altchuler was the first medical director of the Mayo Psychiatry and Psychology Treatment Center. Between 2003 and 2007, he was instrumental leading the Division of Tertiary Psychiatry and Psychology, followed by chair of the Division of Psychiatry and Psychology Specialty Programs between 2007 and 2010, and, from 2010 to 2014, as the psychiatry chair at the Division of Professionalism. In these leadership positions, Dr. Altchuler advanced professional standards and fostered a culture of ethical practice.

Apart from his extensive background at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Altchuler served on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice from 2000 to 2008, and served as President of the Board. Dr. Altchuler spent 2012 to 2015 as a field representative for the Joint Commission in Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois, where he played a key role in evaluating healthcare organizations for accreditation. He was also instrumental from 1987 to 1990 as a consultant psychiatrist at FMC Rochester with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Rochester, Minnesota. Earlier, Dr. Altchuler worked as a consultant and senior research scientist in the life sciences division at Technology Incorporated at the NASA/Johnson Space Center in Houston between 1982 and 1986. Dr. Altchuler gained early success as an aerospace physiologist at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he supported life sciences research through the first four space shuttle flights, between 1978 and 1982.

Dr. Altchuler's academic appointments began in 1975, when he served as a teaching and research assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1975 to 1978. He was also a faculty member at the University of Houston's department of human development and consumer sciences as an adjunct assistant professor of nutrition from 1980 to 1983.

Foundational to his multifaceted career, Dr. Altchuler earned a Bachelor of Science in life sciences with a minor in education from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1973, where he received the Frederick Gardiner Fassett Jr. Award that year, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism with minors in pathology and international nutrition planning on campus in 1979. He also earned a Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1986, a residency in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester in 1990 and coursework in the advanced management program for healthcare executives from the University of Minnesota in Rochester in 1999.

Notably, Dr. Altchuler's early interest in aerospace began during undergraduate work with Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation on the F-14 program during summer internships starting in 1970. After completing his doctorate at MIT, he joined NASA's life sciences division before pursuing medical school.

Dr. Altchuler holds numerous certifications reflecting his expertise. He holds an unrestricted active medical license in Minnesota, as well as a HIMS psychiatrist designation and previously an aviation medical examiner designation by the Federal Aviation Administration, sleep medicine certification, board certification in addiction psychiatry, and board certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

In addition to his recognition as a fellow of both the Civil Aviation Medical Association, where he twice served on its board of directors, and the American College of Psychiatrists, Dr. Altchuler is recognized as a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Altchuler has held several leadership roles at the American College of Psychiatrists including chairing the Laughlin selection committee, an experience he found deeply rewarding due to its focus on mentoring future psychiatric leaders. Dr. Altchuler also chaired the ACPsych's membership committee and served as a Regent of The College. Furthermore, Dr. Altchuler contributed significantly to national standards through service on several committees, such as the council on quality care for the American Psychiatric Association and chairing the accreditation committee for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, among many others across state medical boards, professional societies and regulatory bodies.

From 2000 to 2009, Dr. Altchuler served on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, ultimately serving as president of the board. He also played important roles in national medical licensure with his roles at the National Board of Medical Examiners. In addition to writing and reviewing questions for the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) from 2011 to 2017, he sat on the Coordinating Committee, the body overseeing the entire USMLE.

Civic engagement has been equally central throughout Dr. Altchuler's life. He has continued to serve as an educational counselor for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2022. Previously, activities included roles with the World Organization of the Scout Movement, USA Swimming, and, among others, Scouting America.

Throughout his career, Dr. Altchuler has demonstrated a commitment to advancing knowledge through research, education and clinical practice. Dr. Altchuler's contributions have been recognized through numerous honors, including recognition for excellence in teaching from Mayo Medical School in 2005, recognition in the Guide to America's Top Psychiatrists listings for 2005-2006, and a Bronze Level Mayo Quality Fellow Recognition Award in 2010, in addition to multiple Service Awards from the American Red Cross spanning four decades. Scouting America recognized Dr. Altchuler's service with the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards. As a Scouter, Dr. Altchuler earned his Wood Badge beads and was a Bobwhite.

Beyond these accolades, Dr. Altchuler has been most proud of mentoring numerous young learners who have gone on to achieve highly successful careers, a testament to both his leadership in academic medicine and his dedication to fostering future generations in psychiatry. As he looks toward the future, he intends to continue volunteering with youth-serving organizations during his free time, embodying a lifelong commitment to service both within medicine and beyond.
