(Ackerman for Athletes Learning, Educational Resources and Training), he led the organization from 1986 to present with a mission to prioritize education for student-athletes. Under his guidance, ALERT served more than 2,500 young people, with nearly all participants successfully completing the program. He further contributed to the community through service on Eastern Michigan University's Foundation Board for nine years and on the Michigan Community Commission Board for an equal duration.

Initially focused on baseball until his junior year of high school in Ann Arbor due to his height advantage, he transitioned to basketball and quickly excelled. He was named an honorary All-State player during his first year on the court and earned All-American honors as a senior, achievements that attracted interest from more than 100 colleges nationwide. He continued his basketball career at Eastern Michigan University, where he again received All-American recognition as a sophomore before transferring from Junior College in Casper, Wyoming, and earning additional All-American honors there.
Despite suffering an injury during his senior year of college basketball, Mr. Higgins was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors and went on to play professionally for two years with the Indiana Pacers. His athletic legacy was later honored with induction into the Eastern Michigan Hall of Fame.
