RALEIGH, NC, June 05, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Martin W. King, PhD, FITS, LTI, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. King has established a distinguished career spanning more than four decades across industry, government and academia in the United States, Canada and Europe. Since 2000, he has served as a professor of biotextiles and textile technology at North Carolina State University, where he has demonstrated exceptional expertise in the field of biotextiles and textile technology. His tenure at the university has been marked by significant contributions to research, teaching and mentorship, solidifying his reputation as a leading authority in his discipline.

Prior to joining North Carolina State University, Dr. King held the position of professor of textile science at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada from 1972 to 2000. His commitment to excellence was further exemplified through his concurrent appointment as visiting professor of biomaterials in the Department of Surgery at Université Laval, Québec, Canada from 1983 to 1998, where he contributed with his colleague, Dr. Robert Guidoin, to the establishment of The Biomaterials Institute for the development of biomaterials research and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Dr. King's professional journey began after earning a Bachelor of Science in polymer technology and plastics engineering from The University of Manchester in England in 1972. Influenced by a family deeply rooted in education—his parents, uncles, aunts and sister were all teachers—he initially sought a different path by entering industry. His early career included work with Canadian Industries Limited in Kingston, Ontario, where he facilitated the transition from cotton to polyester for textile manufacturers, providing technical guidance on adapting equipment and processes for new materials.

Later, Dr. King's pursuit of advanced knowledge led him to France, where he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in biomedical engineering at Université de Technologie de Compiègne (University of Technology of Compiègne) in 1991. Today, he has been recognized for his leadership within professional organizations, as a licensed engineer (Licentiate) of the Textile Institute, UK, as a past president and fellow of The Institute of Textile Science, Canada and as a past president of the Canadian Biomaterials Society.

Dr. King's scholarly contributions include co-authoring "Graft Durability and Fatigue after In Situ Fenestration of Endovascular Stent Grafts Using Radiofrequency Puncture and Balloon Dilatation," published in the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in 2014. Born in England during wartime circumstances that led her family to Wales for safety, Dr. King later married G. Gloria Chong in 1968. He is the parent of Andrew his son, who lives in France, and his stepdaughter Dr. Anne Edwards, MD, is a pediatrician and a member of the Privy Counsel of Barbados, West Indies. In his personal time, he enjoys playing the viola in orchestras and chamber groups.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. King received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Biomedical Textiles Conference MedTex17 held in Shanghai, China, in 2017. Overall, he attributes his success to his membership in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), emphasizing the importance of recognizing and nurturing the inner divinity within every individual. He maintains a positive outlook toward others and believes that disagreements can always be resolved through dialogue and understanding - a philosophy that shapes both his personal interactions and professional performance.
