As Port of Los Angeles' Chief Sustainability Officer Mr. Cannon spent thirteen years working internationally with maritime industry representatives helping to lead discussions and implement programs for groundbreaking reductions in emissions from shipping in the open seas and at berth, including installation of some of the first shore-power equipment for ships at Chinese ports. Prior to that, Mr. Cannon's efforts as a technical consultant to the Port to design and implement the world's first Port Clean Truck Program resulted in a program that replaced more than 10,000 aging diesel trucks with new state of the art equipment in a little over four years. The Clean Truck Program has received many awards and continues to be a model for industry throughout the world. These initiatives have had a lasting impact on both regional air quality and the broader movement toward sustainable transportation development worldwide.

As a consultant, Mr. Cannon has permitted thousands of megawatts of clean power generation at power plants in California and New York, and over the years, he has managed a range of environmental projects that required both technical expertise and strategic planning leveraging his background in law and science to address complex technical challenges. His approach emphasized constructing well-supported cases grounded in scientific evidence rather than relying solely on advocacy or public demonstration. As a current Principle at Cannon Environmental Strategies, Mr. Cannon continues to be a strong advocate for sustainable industry practices, including supporting diverse energy solutions and reducing the carbon content in fuels, based on a technology-neutral approach.

Mr. Cannon's academic background has been instrumental in shaping his professional trajectory. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, which provided him with a strong legal framework for addressing policy, regulatory and compliance issues within environmental projects. In 1991, he shifted to technical consulting, motivated by a desire to marry science and law in the development of environmental solutions rather than rely solely on legal advocacy.

Before attending law school, Mr. Cannon served as congressional staff for US Representative Martin O Sabo in Washington, DC, where he covered environmental issues and civil rights legislation. Mr. Cannon holds an Artium Baccalaureus in political science and government from Dartmouth College. Mr. Cannon's visionary activities as a young student at Dartmouth College led to him be recognized with the College's prestigious Dean's Prize Award at graduation for his singular impact on the college during his four years there.
