Prior to joining Doe Run, Dr. Gajaraj served as an Environmental Scientist at Bayer AG in Missouri from 2020 to 2025. As an Environmental Fate and Metabolism Study Director, he led environmental safety assessments for multiple pipeline chemicals, enabling global product registrations and successful market launches. He directed field dissipation and residue studies under Good Laboratory Practices, developed risk assessment models, and prepared regulatory dossiers for U.S. and international agencies. His work played a critical role in ensuring environmental safety and preventing long-term ecological impacts.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Gajaraj served as an Environmental Engineer at HDR, Inc., where he contributed to the design, permitting, and optimization of water and wastewater treatment systems, supporting regulatory compliance and infrastructure improvements. He also held the role of Senior Staff Engineer at Geosyntec Consultants, Inc., where he led environmental monitoring and remediation efforts, advised clients on regulatory compliance, and supported complex site assessments across multiple industries.
Dr. Gajaraj began his professional journey in public service as an Engineering Intern with the City of Columbia, Missouri, where he supported stormwater management initiatives and community-based environmental programs. Concurrently, he served as a Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Missouri, conducting research on bioelectrochemical systems for wastewater treatment and contributing to academic instruction. He also held a similar research and teaching role at San Diego State University, focusing on bioremediation and environmental systems analysis. He began his career as a Software Engineer at Infosys Limited in Bengaluru, India, where he worked on data mining applications for oil exploration projects with Schlumberger and British Petroleum (BP) before transitioning into environmental engineering.
Dr. Gajaraj's academic background has been foundational to his success. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri in 2014, where he was recognized as an Outstanding Graduate Student and received the Paul Kufrin Memorial Scholarship, among other honors. He also holds a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from RV College of Engineering, where he was recognized as the department's Most Outstanding Student.
A licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Missouri, Dr. Gajaraj also holds the Envision Sustainability Professional credential and Lean Six Sigma certification. He has further strengthened his leadership capabilities through advanced training, including business and team leadership certifications from McKinsey & Company. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional persistence and a commitment to continuous improvement, consistently advancing toward long-term goals while delivering measurable impact. He is widely recognized for his expertise in pollution control and environmental systems and maintains active involvement in leading professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the Water Environment Federation, and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Gajaraj has made significant contributions to research and STEM education. He has authored over a dozen peer-reviewed publications, serves on the editorial board of the journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research, and acts as a reviewer for numerous international scientific journals. He has also presented at conferences and symposiums worldwide, supporting the dissemination of knowledge within the profession.
