Rather than allowing hardship to define him, Rate chooses to embrace life and pursue a positive future. After the passing of his father, his sister comes to realize the unfair treatment Rate had endured. Although her father had left everything to her, she came to realize the unfair treatment her brother had received from the family. She returns the farm back to Rate, which leads to healing between she and her brother.

Born in Allegan, Ms. Hammel enjoys a variety of personal interests, such as crocheting, latch hook rugs, embroidery, and gardening - including tending pear, apple, peach and cherry trees, elderberry bushes, grape vines, hickory nut trees and an asparagus patch - and canning or freezing produce from her garden. She also enters items in the local Hillsdale County Fair. They include antiques, craft items, baked goods, and canned goods. She has acquired many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons along with a few "best in class" ribbons for her talent and efforts.
