WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY, June 24, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Arbie Orenstein has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Orenstein's distinguished career in musicology and education spans more than five decades, marked by his tenure as a professor of music at Queens College from 1967 to 2022. During this period he taught under-graduate and graduate courses in classical music and mentored students on master's essays and doctoral dissertations. His expertise in Western European music, French music, the works of Maurice Ravel and Jewish music has earned him recognition as a leading authority in these fields. Dr. Orenstein's commitment to research is exemplified by his extensive documentation of Ravel's compositions and manuscripts. His scholarly output includes authoring "Ravel: Man and Musician," published in 1975 by Columbia University Press (translated into German and Japanese), and "Maurice Ravel, Lettres, Écrits, Entretiens," published by Flammarion in 1989, translated as "A Ravel Reader, Correspondence, Articles, Interviews," released in 1990 by Columbia University Press (translated into Italian in two volumes). Dr. Orenstein has also written articles for esteemed journals, including The Musical Quarterly, The Music Forum, Cahiers Maurice Ravel and the Revue de Musicologie.

Among Dr. Orenstein's most significant achievements is the discovery of some 1,300 pages of previously unknown manuscripts by Maurice Ravel during his Fulbright Grant in France. This groundbreaking work culminated in six world premieres performed at Queens College's Colden Auditorium on February 23, 1975, an event reviewed by The New York Times and the New York Post, and recorded live by the Musical Heritage Society (MHS 3581). In recognition of his significant cultural achievements the French government knighted Dr. Orenstein in 1998.

Throughout his career at Queens College Dr. Orenstein developed innovative curricula, including a course on 3,000 years of Jewish music. In 1992, he wrote a new introduction to Abraham Z. Idelsohn's standard work on Jewish music, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting Jewish culture.

Dr. Orenstein's educational background includes a Ph.D. in musicology from Columbia University in 1968, following a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Queens College in 1961. His early education at the High School of Music and Art has fostered lifelong connections with noted classmates through reunions spanning more than seven decades.

Reflecting on his academic career, Dr. Orenstein attributes his achievements to hard work, good fortune and his many personal relationships with friends and colleagues of Ravel during the 1960s and beyond. In Paris, a letter of introduction from his mentor Roland-Manuel, Ravel's biographer and closest friend for 35 years, enabled Dr. Orenstein to interview pianists, conductors, composers and artists, all of whom brought depth to his research and understanding of Ravel's personality and creativity.

Beyond academia, Dr. Orenstein has demonstrated a strong commitment to civic engagement through annual contributions to charitable organizations such as The American Red Cross and The United Jewish Appeal. He is married with two children--a daughter and a son-- and one granddaughter. He enjoys reading, traveling, performing at the piano and studying Biblical texts and commentaries in Hebrew.

Looking ahead, Dr. Orenstein intends to continue collaborating with the New York Philharmonic. He has presented pre-concert lectures in the past and is presently editing a Hebraic folk song orchestrated by Ravel in 1924 that has yet to be performed in the United States. During his present "retirement" he continues to co-edit Musica Judaica, a scholarly journal devoted to all aspects of Jewish music.
