He also taught at Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, New York, for two years. Recognizing a need for more priests in parishes, Fr. McWeeney returned to parish ministry, where he became deeply involved in church construction projects, overseeing the building and renovation of several churches and transforming spaces to better serve their communities.
Highly educated, Fr. McWeeney's academic journey began at St. Joseph's Seminary and College (Dunwoodie), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1969. He soon after received a Master of Divinity on campus in 1972 before being ordained on May 26, 1973. Driven by a desire for comprehensive education, Fr. McWeeney pursued a master's degree in education with a focus on pastoral counseling from Iona University, graduating in 1975. He later completed a Doctor of Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1997. This extensive academic background provided him with a solid foundation for his teaching roles and leadership positions within the church.

He has been an active member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and serves as a New York State chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. Even after retirement, Fr. These works underscore his commitment to religious scholarship and preserving church history.
Among Fr. McWeeney's most significant achievements was his tenure as a pastor at Saint Martin de Porres. There, he led efforts to build a new church for the community while transforming the old church into a Nativity center for seniors. Fr. McWeeney spearheaded an expansion project for the parish school, investing approximately $3 million, which increased enrollment from about 190 to 400 students and secured its future viability. He McWeeney credits these accomplishments to collaborative efforts with devoted staff members who sought out best practices from other parishes.
Fr. McWeeney's dedication has been recognized with numerous honors, including recognition from the National Workshop on Christian Unity, induction into the Hall of Fame at Our Lady of Lourdes, Man of the Year awards from both the Knights of Columbus and Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, as well as the James Fitzgerald Award for ecumenical work. Throughout his life, he has drawn inspiration from influential figures, such as Cardinal John O'Connor, whose example shaped his approach to ministry. Fr. McWeeney has also maintained long-standing collaborations with Lutheran organizations focused on housing initiatives for those in need. Notably, these efforts were honored by establishing the Brian McWeeney Center for Education and Culture Change by Lutheran partners. The Brian McWeeney Award is presented annually by the Knights of Columbus to priests exemplifying service to church and community.
In retirement, Fr. McWeeney remains active by volunteering with faith-based organizations and collaborating on creative projects, including a film about two Harlem, New York, basketball players associated with Saint Bonaventure University.
