Mr. Nilsson was born in Washington, D.C. and then spent his formative years in Michigan City, IN. For his senior year of high school, he attended Phillips Academy in Andover on a scholarship, an experience that broadened his academic perspective and prepared him for higher education. He continued his studies at Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and English. The combination of scientific rigor and literary skill acquired during his time at Purdue University proved instrumental throughout his professional journey, particularly in technical writing and editing.
Following his graduation, Mr. Nilsson entered military service with the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. During this period, he was assigned to the Chemical Corps Publications Agency, where he authored the field manual "Defense Against CBR Attack." This publication addressed defense strategies against chemical, biological and radiological threats, reflecting both his scientific background and proficiency in technical documentation.
After completing his military service, Mr. Nilsson began a distinguished 28-year career with General Electric. Initially stationed in Huntsville, he later relocated to Arizona and Maryland as part of the company's computer division. Serving as publications manager until his retirement in 1990, he managed GE's computer documentation and publications, a noteworthy role in the emerging field of computer documentation as the industry was rapidly transforming the modern workplace.
Mr. Nilsson's responsibilities at General Electric included overseeing the creation of manuals that detailed programming results. His expertise in computer documentation and publications established him as a respected authority in the field. Mr. Nilsson was named Fellow (its highest honor) of the Society for Technical Communication, further underscoring his commitment to excellence in technical writing and publishing.
In addition to his technical career, Mr. Nilsson has made significant contributions as an author. After retiring from General Electric, he devoted himself to researching and writing about place names. His published works include "Discover Why It's Called…" (about 150 places on the Maryland Eastern Shore), "The Names of Washington, DC" (275 places) and "Why Is It Called That?," (350 places in Huntsville and Madison County, Alabama).
Beyond his professional roles, Mr. Nilsson, alongside his wife, the former Nancy Mitchell, were active in the theatre for nearly 40 years as actors on stage, as directors, and as officers of the Huntsville and Rockville, MD, Little Theaters. His wife became a successful playwright, and Mr. Nilsson edited and published her book "All I Can See – and Seven More Plays."
In 2018 Mr. Nilsson published his own "Autobiography of a Book Man." In it he reflects on his career that spanned military service, corporate leadership, and the arts, and he attributes his success to his writing, editing, and publishing disciplines he has pursued with distinction.
