Ms. Sandine has distinguished herself as a Behavioral Health Therapist with the DuPage County Health Department in Wheaton, Illinois, where she has served since 2021. In this capacity, she manages substance use group therapy and oversees a three-hour men's Intensive Outpatient Program that convenes three days each week. Ms. Sandine also leads a Cognitive Change group focused on cognitive behavioral therapy utilizing the book "Criminal and Addictive Thinking," conducts weekly and bi-weekly family sessions for treatment, and visits the county jail to facilitate psychoeducation groups and provide and support for inmates in custody in the jail's Recovery Pod. Notably, her work with incarcerated individuals includes both one-on-one and group sessions utilizing Hazelton's A New Direction Curriculum.

Among other responsibilities through her work at DuPage County Health Department, Ms. Sandine performs substance use level of care assessments for clients, many of whom are on probation, parole or have other mandatory reporting requirements, and develops tailored treatment plans that address mental health, trauma and historical factors. She also collaborates closely with DuPage County's drug court program and the Mental Illness Court Alternative Program, coordinating care with probation officers to ensure comprehensive support for her clients.

A hallmark of Ms. Sandine's tenure at the health department has been in her experience in facilitating Seeking Safety group, which addresses trauma and substance use without requiring participants to disclose all their traumatic experiences. Instead, she teaches skills that help individuals understand the interplay between addiction and trauma, including grounding techniques and methods to recognize trauma reactions. Ms. Sandine's approach reflects a deep commitment to increasing awareness about trauma and equipping participants with practical tools for safety during trauma responses.

From 2024 to 2025, Ms. Sandine additionally served as a domestic violence and sexual assault therapist at Mutual Ground in Aurora, Illinois. In this role, she provided specialized support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, drawing on her expertise as a certified domestic violence professional. Ms. Sandine's experience in this area continues to inform her current practice at the health department, where she offers resources, education and individualized support to men and women affected by domestic violence, a critical intersection with substance use issues.

Ms. Sandine's earlier career included her work as a recovery support professional at Recovery Centers of America in St. Charles, Illinois, from 2020 to 2021. There, she contributed to residential substance use treatment programs, further developing her expertise in addiction services. Ms. Sandine's foundational experience in behavioral health began at Ecker Center for Behavioral Health in Elgin, Illinois, where she was a mental health professional and residential case manager for five years, beginning in 2006. During this period, when mental health and substance use treatment were often separate, she supported adults with serious mental illness in a supportive housing program.

Ms. Sandine's academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, completed in 2006, and a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, earned in 2020. Her advanced education has equipped her with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective intervention with complex populations involved in both the justice system and behavioral health services. Ms. Sandine is particularly proud of earning the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor certification through the Illinois Certification Board Inc., as well as the Certified Domestic Violence Professional designation from Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professionals. She also holds a domestic violence and sexual assault certification from the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence. These credentials underscore Ms. Sandine's commitment to providing comprehensive care that addresses both substance use and domestic violence, areas she recognizes as deeply interconnected.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Ms. Sandine has been civically engaged as a donor and participant in the Alzheimer's Walk organized by the Alzheimer's Association since 2008. She also volunteered with the police department in the Village of Campton Hills from 2019 to 2021.

Throughout her career, Ms. Sandine has been recognized multiple times for upholding the values and mission of the DuPage County Health Department. She attributes her success to setting clear boundaries while treating every client with respect and dignity, a philosophy shaped by her recognition that many individuals have not always been treated well throughout their journeys. Her unique approach has resonated especially with male clients who often lack safe spaces for open discussion about their feelings and struggles.

Ms. Sandine's expertise in substance use intervention, combined with her dedication to trauma-informed care and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, distinguishes her as an accomplished leader within behavioral health services. Looking ahead, she is working toward obtaining the Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug counselor certification, the next level within the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor tier, which will allow her to practice more broadly if desired. Ms. Sandine remains committed to serving at the health department as one of its longest-serving substance use staff members, acting as both a mentor for colleagues and a trusted resource within a small team dedicated to supporting individuals with Medicaid or the uninsured, many of whom are involved with the justice system.
