WILMINGTON, NC, August 05, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Janette K. Hopper, MFA, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Hopper has established herself as a distinguished artist, professor and advocate for environmental conservation through her creative work internationally, nationally and locally where she presently resides in Wilmington, North Carolina, making art full-time at her personal studio called Twin Pines. Over the past two decades, she has dedicated her professional life to producing nature-focused artwork across various media including oil painting, printmaking, masks of natural materials and performance art. Her artistic style is as varied as it is profound. It often stems from direct observation but transcends into the realm of abstraction focusing on luminosity, color, and movement.

In the realm of nature, her oil painting series "Dancing on the Last Stump", a continuing series of panoramic large scale oil paintings and her ongoing series of masks crafted from organic found materials collected from nature are her focus. The masks, inspired by indigenous traditions and intentionally constructed without mouths, serve as a visual call to action for environmental advocacy and are now represented in numerous private collections and galleries.

When talking about connections and current political issues her linocut prints speak volumes and they have been collected and published by museums in Europe and the U.S. The series include the Adam and Eve, the Freedom of Expression, Face War and the Seven Deadly Sins series. They started in Denmark at her solo show in Copenhagen and continue to this day.

Also noteworthy are the unique prints of Ms. Hopper which are distinguished by their individuality and the meticulous process involved in their creation. These prints are made by hand, eschewing any photographic techniques, making each one truly unique and irreplaceable. Utilizing woodblock printing, linocuts, sumi ink painting, monoprints and Chine-collé, she creates artworks that are as diverse in technique as they are in aesthetic. All together with the museum-quality papers she uses, they give a layer of complexity and beauty to her prints.

Her work as a Professor of Visual Art at colleges and universities, and her many artistic pursuits, have enabled her to teach and exhibit internationally in Denmark, Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, Bulgaria, Mexico, and New Zealand. Her artwork is collected in permanent collections in over 60 public spaces such as museums, colleges, and universities, most of which are large oil paintings. Her work has been included in over 300 solo, juried, invitational and group shows. Some show highlights are with New York City artists in Lincoln Center, a Fulbright exhibit in Washington D.C., an exhibit with Mar Sueiras in Madrid Spain and at the Galería Espiral in Noja Spain, and solo shows at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, two separate shows in Bordeaux, France and also Copenhagen, Denmark.

Ms. Hopper has achieved recognition for her expertise in painting. In 2025, she held a major benefit exhibition at Red Springs Artspace, showcasing large scale sky/water oil paintings. Sales enabled her to give a sizable donation to the biology and art departments at the University of North Carolina Pembroke to support student research. She has also collaborated with organizations such as the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, which allowed her to donate to their important work through the sale of her paintings at their annual meetings.

Throughout her career, Ms. Hopper has achieved recognition for her expertise in nature-focused art and mastery of multiple artistic medias. Her academic education did not end with her own education. She went on to share her knowledge with others ending her teaching career as a Professor of Art and Department Chair at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke. During her tenure, she was instrumental in renovating the Art Building, developing international programs for the university, including establishing a German University exchange program that allowed students to study art in Europe. She also taught summer courses abroad and exhibited her work internationally.

Earlier in her academic career, Professor Hopper taught at Columbia Basin College in Washington State and also at Central Michigan University. Her teaching philosophy emphasized cross-cultural engagement, experiential learning, and collaborative courses such as Woman in Art and Literature with the literature professor and Color in Physics and Art with the physics professor. She was an early member of Print Arts Northwest, serving on the board, and has maintained active involvement with the organization in spite of relocating from the region. Additionally, she was a member of Palaur International, based in Denmark, an international collective of art creators with whom she has exhibited extensively across Europe. Professor Hopper also held a membership position in the College Art Association during her academic career.

Academically, Ms. Hopper's background includes earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boise State University in Idaho before completing a Master of Art Education at the same institution. She later attained a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon—the terminal degree in studio arts—solidifying her credentials as an expert practitioner. Earlier studies included coursework at Georgia State University, and the University of Idaho following graduation from Boise High School and post graduate studies in printmaking at Gonzaga University.

Reflecting on her career, Ms. Hopper attributes her success to the support of her family, exceptional art programs encountered throughout her education and a continuous stream of opportunities within the arts. Her career is distinguished by numerous honors and accolades. Among these, she experienced a prestigious United States Fulbright Award that enabled her to teach in Denmark for one year. During this fellowship, she was awarded a Danish Fulbright grant for an exhibition in Copenhagen — a significant milestone that expanded her international reputation.

Another highlight of Ms. Hopper's career was receiving a highly competitive university system sabbatical grant—one or two awarded annually — which allowed her to attend the SIANOJA XIX (Simposio Internacional de Artistas Noja), week-long artist residency in Noja Spain. There, she collaborated with many international artists, including Mar Sueiras, a painter and Asian Art History expert from the University of Salamanca, Spain. They later had two exhibitions, most recently in Madrid. Her artist friends from SIANOJA from Japan, Spain, Mexico and Eastern Europe are in close contact. Other artist residencies include Montana Artists Refuge, Basin, Montana and National Park Service, North Cascades Artist Residence, Stehekin, Washington. Additional recognition includes various university grants and awards and arts council funding throughout her career.

Ms. Hopper's civic engagement extends beyond visual arts into writing, and philanthropy, being a juror in art competitions, curating exhibits, and directing arts festivals and art galleries. She donates proceeds from her artwork sales to support educational initiatives. Her service record includes two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in María La Baja, Colombia—a formative experience that influenced both her worldview and creative output. As an author, she has contributed articles to Encore magazine, written poetry during her college years, published a short story recounting her Peace Corps experiences and contributed various art critiques and book reviews.

Born in Oakland, California, while her father briefly served in the Navy during World War II, Ms. Hopper spent most of her formative years in Idaho after relocating there with her family. Janette's path to becoming an accomplished artist began in her early childhood. She graduated from Boise High School before embarking on an academic journey that would shape her lifelong dedication to art.

Today, Ms. Hopper is the mother of two grown daughters: one a veterinarian and pilot with a passion for flight, reflected metaphorically in Ms. Hopper's panoramic oil paintings. The other holds a master's degree in public art from New York University, was connected with the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, and helped facilitate the installation of The Gates by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, then later took leadership in the Washington State Art Organization, placing public art. Currently she is a professional in the healing arts and is continuing her study of Bowen. Both of her daughters also teach their passions. Ms. Hopper has two grandchildren, one is a professional materials engineer, and the other studying art education. Ms. Hopper lives with her husband, Charles Kernan, who is her publicist and photographer after retiring as a chemical engineer.

Currently, in addition to creating new works at her Twin Pines Studio, Ms. Hopper continues to exhibit widely and engage with audiences through talks and curated exhibitions, such as those recently hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington Library's permanent collection. She hopes to be remembered as a devoted friend, compassionate mentor and valued member of her family. She cherishes creating lasting memories through shared family and friend traditions. She loves vacations that bring loved ones together to strengthen their bonds and enjoy one another's company.
