FALLBROOK, CA, August 19, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Matthew Yamaguchi has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Yamaguchi has established a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in architecture, architectural engineering, project management, and construction support, with a current focus on complex defense and aerospace projects. Since 2018, he has served as senior project manager and construction administrator at HDR's Northern California Federal Business Group, where he led the design and delivery of facilities for the United States Department of Defense. In this capacity, Mr. Yamaguchi was responsible for assembling and managing multidisciplinary teams, developing project proposals, and managing schedules and budgets from initiation through completion. His leadership was instrumental in the successful execution of planning studies for the United States Space Force, and numerous hangar, airfield, and training simulator projects for the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. This work included the development of a major hangar and AMU for Air Force Special Operations at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and construction administration of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter bed down at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, which included a dual-squadron hangar, apron expansion, and training simulator.
Among his most significant achievements is his collaboration with the United States Space Force in project and program manager roles for planning studies to expand space launch operations at Vandenberg Space Force Base, a project he regards as a career highlight.
Prior to rejoining HDR, Inc., Mr. Yamaguchi served as a project manager at the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Southwest from 2015 to 2018. In this role, he managed critical infrastructure projects at the Naval Aviation Weapons Station China Lake, including beginning the renovation of it's core facility, Michelson Lab. This experience further honed his skills in coordinating large-scale government contracts and ensuring compliance with stringent federal facility design and security standards.
From 1988 to 2008, Mr. Yamaguchi held several key positions at Fluor Corporation, including team lead, design manager, field engineer and architect. During his twenty-year tenure, he directed multidisciplinary teams on national and international assignments, delivering complex architectural solutions for clients in both public and private sectors. Notable projects included management of an advisory team on the construction of Passenger Terminal 1 of the Inchon International Airport, Design Manager for the Old Dubai Waterfront Project, Construction Engineering Manager for a Four Seasons Resort in Exuma, The Bahamas, and Site Facilities Area Manager for the original Hanford Waste Vitrification Plant in Hanford Washington. His willingness to accept challenging assignments that others avoided, enabled him to gain valuable design and construction experience across diverse environments.
Mr. Yamaguchi's academic foundation was laid at Tuskegee University in Alabama, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1978. His studies were briefly interrupted but resumed with renewed focus, culminating in a degree that provided the technical knowledge essential for his subsequent achievements. He was recognized for excellence in architectural landscape design, and served as president of the local student chapter of the AIA. After graduating, he worked for several small architectural firms in Los Angeles and Santa Monica before joining Southern California Edison as a contract team lead. He became a registered architect in California in 1988, which was pivotal in establishing his career at Fluor, and a prerequisite for all subsequent positions.
The roots of Mr. Yamaguchi's interest in architecture can be traced to his upbringing in California, where frequent exposure to construction sites sparked an early fascination with building design. Although initially drawn to biology and forestry due to his appreciation for nature—an influence shaped by his father's career as a botanist—he ultimately found his calling in architecture during college. This blend of interests has informed his approach to integrating natural elements into built environments.
Throughout his career, Mr. Yamaguchi has been recognized for his contributions with honors, including two Pathfinder Awards at HDR, a service coin from the NAVFAC SW Commander for project execution at China Lake, a Certificate of appreciation from FEMA for work on the Tropical Storm Alison recovery at the University of Houston, and an MVP award from the Fluor Infrastructure Operating Company for managing the Inchon International Airport project, all reflecting his commitment to execution, innovation and excellence in the industry.
Born in Vallejo, Mr. Yamaguchi maintains personal interests that include bicycling, hiking, and aviation photography. Looking ahead, he intends to continue serving as a technical consultant for the expansion of space launch facilities at Vandenberg Space Force Base while dedicating more time to bicycling and resuming air show photography—pursuits that reflect both his professional expertise and lifelong passions.
